What is the cause of Prince Charles' swollen finger?

Although the exact cause of Prince Charles' so called 'sausage fingers' is not clearly known. Experts believe swollen fingers can occur due to several reasons.

One of the common health problems associated with swollen fingers is edema.

UK's National Health Services (NHS) describes edema as swollen hands or fingers resulting from fluid build-up. These swellings either go away on their own or need medical intervention. It is said that edema can also affect the leg including areas like the ankles and the feet.

Other symptoms of edema to watch out for

Besides swelling and puffiness of the tissues under the skin, the Mayo Clinic states that stretched, shiny skin, dimply skin, after being pressed for several seconds and increased abdominal size are also common signs of edema.

When to call your doctor?

Edema symptoms may worsen if not treated on time. The NHS recommends seeking medical help if a person suffers from the following symptoms:

- Swelling in only one arm or hand when there's no obvious cause

- When the swelling is severe, painful or starts very suddenly

- The swollen area is red or feels hot to the touch

- Swollen hands or fingers accompanied by high temperature and shivers

Also, if you have diabetes and your arm or hand is swollen, make sure to contact your doctor.

What causes edema?

While swollen fingers may be a cause of edema, there are several reasons why you have such a condition in the first place.

That said, some of the common causes of edema include:

- Eating excess salty foods

- Sitting or laying in the same position for prolonged hours

- Pregnancy

- Certain medications

- An injury, especially a sprain or a strain

- An insect bite or sting

- Angioedema or skin allergy

- In severe cases a blood clot or an infection or problems with kidneys, liver or heart.
