A study by William Paterson University in the US revealed the one fruit that tops all health benefits. The researchers compared different varieties of fruit, analysing their nutritional value and calorie intake.
In the results, they revealed that lemons stood out for their concentration of vitamins, fibre and powerful antioxidants such as flavonoids. Yes, a small amount of the citric fruit can provide you with beneficial compounds more than any other fruit.
It stood out among 41 food options showing that it can satisfy 100% of nutritional needs in just 100 calories. Additionally, it can help boost the immune system, absorb iron, improve digestion and even prevent cardiovascular diseases because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
Acid that alkalinises the body

Along with these benefits, lemons have a unique property. Though acidic in nature they have an alkalinising effect in the body after metabolised as they help balance its pH level. According to the study, this helps improve the overall metabolism of the body and improves better intestinal health.
Researchers stressed that lemons contain Vitamin C, which is a vital nutrient for immunity and its acidic properties are ones to be utilised. “Its acidity is an ally of health, not an enemy”, they added.
Ways to incorporate lemon into your daily diet

While the classic lemon water is the best way to include lemons in your diet daily, you can also opt for drizzling their juice on top of your salads, food and soup. Other interesting options are lemon tea, lemon and fruit infusions, and lemon ice cubes.
While adding lemon to a recipe is advisable, scientists warn against consuming lemon juice on an empty stomach as its acidity can damage tooth enamel and upset sensitive stomachs.
