Are you aware of scalp cancer?

When talking about skin cancer, we often think of skin on the entire body, but forget one important part – our scalp. Scalp cancer is a lesser known form of skin cancer, also known as cutaneous scalp malignancy. It refers to cancerous growths that occur on the head. Scalp cancer can occur due to exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

As the scalp is commonly covered by hair, it gets harder to spot changes in the skin, making it more difficult to detect this form of skin cancer at an early stage. Further, the symptoms can be mistaken as signs of regular day to day occurrences, such as an irritated scalp or dandruff.

Signs and symptoms of scalp cancer will vary depending on the type of cancer present. Here are some common ones you should be aware of and not ignore if you spot them.
2/6

Persistent sore or non-healing sore

A sore on the scalp that will not heal or keeps returning could be a sign of scalp cancer.

Further, persistent itching or tenderness on a specific area of the scalp that doesn't get better with regular care could also be caused by scalp cancer.

3/6

Lump, bump or irregular patch of skin

A new lump, bump, or swelling on the scalp that persists and grows over time can be a sign of scalp cancer. These patches of scalp usually appear scaly, rough, or crusty, with changes in color or texture. In such a case, it is important to get your scalp checked out by a professional.

4/6

Ulceration, open wound or bleeding

Open sores, ulcers, or wounds that don't heal within a few weeks could be caused by cancer. Further, unexplained bleeding from the scalp can also be a warning sign.

5/6

Changes in hair growth pattern

If you experience noticeable changes in the growth pattern of hair on the scalp, it is best to see a doctor. While this change, such as thinning or loss of hair in a localized area, may not necessarily be caused by cancer, it is best to not ignore it and get a proper diagnosis by a doctor.

6/6

Enlarged lymph nodes

Swollen lymph nodes on the neck or around the scalp area could mean that the scalp cancer has spread.

It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other scalp conditions that are not linked to cancer.
