Spike in cases of Omicron: What can we learn from countries where omicron is surging

What can we learn from other countries

By far we know that omicron is seven times transmissible than the previous coronavirus variants. This is the reason why in just a month after its origin, the new strain has been detected in more than 56 countries across the globe. While in most of the countries a few positive cases of omicron have been detected, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Denmark are worst affected by it. Even though a majority of the population of these countries have been vaccinated, a breakthrough infection has stirred fear worldwide. Here are a few things that we know about this variant so far and measures we can take to prevent it from leading to the third wave.

It is too late to keep omicron out

In the wake of the situation, many countries are imposing travel restrictions, but they might be too late for it. The cases of the variant have started surging now, but the virus originated long back when the travel norms were not that stern. That means there are high chances that the omicron has already entered the country and quickly spread to other parts of the world. Only they are yet to be detected. So, only imposing travel bans from the worst-hit countries won't help to prevent a surge in positive cases.

Omicron may soon become a dominant strain

Ever since the origination of the COVID-19, several strains of COVID-19 have been detected from different parts of the world- Alpha, Beta, Lambda. Out of all, Delta was the most severe one which led to the second COVID wave earlier this year. Experts believe that Omicron, being highly transmissible, can become a dominant strain very soon. Although the symptoms of omicron are milder and do not cause severe disease, it tends to spread to a larger population. As we are aware of the fact, we must be prepared to tackle any situation in the future.

4/5

Vaccination alone would not stop omicron

Omicron is a new strain of coronavirus and not much is known about it till now. Researchers across the globe are still trying to understand the nature of the strain. Experts are even skeptical about the effectiveness of the vaccines being administered on omicron. Some believe that this strain can surpass the immunity gained by natural infection and vaccination. It implies that only getting yourself vaccinated won't protect against the new strain. The cases of breakthrough infection from the worst-hit countries also suggest the same.

5/5

The bottom line

Imposing complete lockdown across the country at the current time might not be possible as it would damage the economy. To prevent the spread of the virus, the government and people both have to take appropriate measures. At our level, all we can do is restrict our movement and outdoor activities. Step outside only when it is absolutely necessary. Along with that follow all the COVID norms like washing hands, wearing a mask and maintaining proper hygiene. Even though we do not know much about the effectiveness of the vaccine on this new variant, getting a shot is the only possible way to reduce the risk of severe infection.
