The surprising signs that your body is crying for Vitamin D - do you have these?

Being a largely tropical country, most of our states receive ample sunlight all through the year, with the exception of a few regions. Despite that, a shocking percentage of Indians are severely deficient in Vitamin D (around 70-81%), also known as the sunshine victim. While the reasons behind the deficiency are aplenty (less exposure to sun, poor diet, darker skin tone etc), the fact of the matter is that Vitamin D deficiency can manifest itself in surprising ways. Lower back pain

If you have nagging back pain, especially in the lower back, that does not go away, low vitamin D could be to blame. Studies show that vitamin D deficiency is linked to lumbar disc degeneration and persistent low back pain, particularly in older adults and postmenopausal women. Many people assume this pain is just a part of aging, but it could be your body’s way of warning you about low vitamin D levels.

Insomnia/restlessness

Struggling to fall asleep or waking up several times during the night? Vitamin D plays a big role in regulating your sleep-wake cycle. It helps with the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy. When you don’t get enough vitamin D, your melatonin levels can drop, leading to poor sleep quality, trouble falling asleep, and frequent awakenings. Even sleep disorders like sleep apnea have been linked to low vitamin D.

Skin issues

Your skin needs vitamin D to stay healthy. If you notice your skin is suddenly dry, itchy, or developing unusual spots or patches, a deficiency might be the cause. Vitamin D helps with skin cell growth and repair, and its anti-inflammatory properties keep conditions like eczema and psoriasis in check. Without enough vitamin D, you may see more skin irritation, dryness, or even new pigmentation spots.

Autoimmune diseases

Vitamin D is a key player in keeping your immune system strong. If you’re getting sick often or dealing with autoimmune problems, low vitamin D might be part of the problem. Research shows that vitamin D helps regulate immune cells and prevents them from attacking your own body, which is what happens in autoimmune diseases. Deficiency in vitamin D can increase your risk of developing conditions like type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders.

High BP/Depression

Feeling down or noticing your blood pressure creeping up? Vitamin D impacts both your mood and heart health. Low levels have been linked to higher rates of depression, possibly because vitamin D affects important brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine. Several studies found that people with higher vitamin D levels had fewer depressive symptoms. There’s also evidence that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to high blood pressure, making it indirectly responsible for ailments like heart disease and stroke.
