This is why people should never rub their eyes
Risk of spreading harmful germs and bacteria
If you must touch your eyes, thoroughly clean your hands with soap and water first to reduce the chance of infection.
Increased chances of eye irritation and allergies
Rubbing our eyes can worsen symptoms of allergies or dryness by irritating the thin, delicate tissues around the eyes. Eye rubbing can trigger the release of histamines, the body’s natural response to allergens, making our eyes itchier and redder. This creates a vicious cycle of rubbing and irritation, which can be especially frustrating for those prone to seasonal allergies or eye dryness.
Instead of rubbing, consider using a cool, damp cloth to gently soothe itchy eyes. Eye drops or artificial tears can also provide relief without irritating the eyes further.
Risk of developing keratoconus
According to a study published in the International Journal of Ophthalmology, excessive rubbing can affect the structure of the cornea over time, causing keratoconus. When you stress on your eyes, the cornea thins and weakens, expanding out into a cone-like form. In severe situations, this might cause impaired vision, light sensitivity, and perhaps the need for corrective surgery. Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder, and eye rubbing is a major contributor.
If you find yourself often scratching your eyes due to discomfort, see an eye expert. They can assist uncover underlying problems and offer appropriate remedies.
Potential for dark circles and wrinkles
Rubbing the eyes has a negative impact not only on the eye but also on the skin surrounding it. The skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive, and constant rubbing can cause damaged blood vessels, which lead to dark circles and puffiness. Over time, this may speed up the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes, making you appear tired or older than you are.
When removing makeup or cleaning your face, move gently around your eyes. Look for soft cotton pads and avoid straining or pulling on the skin to keep it looking healthy and youthful.
