Understanding Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs): Symptoms, diagnosis, and advanced treatment options
In the past, treatment of NET was done similar to conventional cancers arising from the respective organs – but response was poor. Now, in light of new research, that these tumors are a separate entity, newer Targeted therapies are used to treat these tumors. When initially detected and small, these tumors can be treated by endoscopic resection or by surgery. Disease which has spread need various targeted treatments. Another unique factor about these tumors – they overexpress certain receptors called Somatostatin Receptors (SSTR). Low grade tumors can be controlled for long periods with monthly injections of Somatostatin analogues. Upon disease progression, there is a significant role of SSTR directed Radionuclide Targeted Therapy ie PRRT using Lu177-DOTATATE which is given by Nuclear Medicine specialists. A variety of drugs like Everolimus, platinum based chemotherapies are used for the higher grade tumors. Liver directed therapies through Interventional Radiology are available to treat large metastatic tumors in the liver.

There are over a hundred types of brain tumors with their own types of diverse symptoms. It can be difficult for patients or those around them to identify these signs as those of brain tumor. Such was the case of a 38 year old dad-of-two from East Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, who experienced so weird signs that actuality led to a change in his personality.
"I had personality changes. I'm normally very chilled and easygoing with loads of energy,” Express UK quoted Turner. However, the effects of the tumor made him “really tired all the time, really horny and aggressive.” He also started to lose his sense of smell and his eyesight.
The diagnosis in this case happened by chance when Turner’s wife booked him an eye test. The test found an anomaly so he went on to have a scan which discovered the large, orange-sized mass in his brain that required surgery, reported Express UK.
Turner underwent an operation to remove the tumor in October 2014. There are still traces of cancer in his brain so he is monitored on a regular basis.
"I had a positive attitude and genuinely believed I would be alright, but I was terrified inside. I believe there are very small traces left which is what I had radiotherapy for in December 2020," he shared, adding that all his friends and family were very worried.
Brain tumors can have a wide range of symptoms such as severe personality changes, selective memory loss or even adults experiencing growth spurts. The symptoms can vary, depending on where in the brain the tumor is positioned. This can often lead to misdiagnosis of brain tumor as other conditions, such as epilepsy or a stroke. Correct and timely detection and treatment may avoid complications later on.
While anyone can develop a brain tumor, there are certain factors that can put you at higher risk. Brain tumors can happen at any age, but they happen most often in older adults. People who have been exposed to a strong type of radiation also have an increased risk of brain tumor. Some DNA changes that increase the risk of brain tumor are inherited.
