Vitamin B12 deficiency: Facts you didn't know

Vitamin B12 is one of the essential vitamins our body uses for proper nerve function, red blood cell production, and brain function. Unlike some vitamins our body can synthesise independently, vitamin B12 must be acquired through eating foods or a supplement. It primarily exists in foods that are animal origin, like meat, fish, eggs, and milk. Although found in most common foods, a staggering number of individuals are deficient in B12 without even knowing it. One of the more insidious and often undiagnosed indicators of this deficiency is brain fog, a disorder marked by forgetfulness, confusion, and lack of focus.

Vitamin B12 deficiency and brain fog

Though brain fog is not a medical diagnosis, it is a common phrase people use to describe an overall feeling of mental haze. People with B12 deficiency, for example, might find they are unable to think clearly, forgetting fairly uncomplicated tasks or conversations, and feeling tired mentally despite having adequate rest. This occurs because B12 plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the nervous system. A shortage of this vitamin can impair communication between brain cells, resulting in the cognitive sluggishness commonly described as brain fog. In severe cases, prolonged deficiency may even lead to nerve damage or memory issues that resemble dementia, especially in older adults.

3/5

Symptoms of B12 deficiency

B12 deficiency can show up in various ways besides brain fog. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, pale skin, shortness of breath, mood swings, and even depression. These symptoms often appear gradually and can be confused with other health problems, which makes diagnosis difficult. Sometimes, people might feel fine physically but only have cognitive issues. This is why brain fog can signal a possible underlying deficiency.

4/5

Causes of deficiency

There are many possible reasons for a B12 deficiency. The most common reason for a vitamin B12 deficiency is dietary deficiency, if you are a vegetarian or a vegan, then you have a B12 deficiency because there are very few plant foods that contain vitamin B12. Other causes of a B12 deficiency include absorption problems that can arise from medical conditions such as pernicious anemia or celiac disease and can lead to B12 deficiency from extractions of the digestive tract. In addition, older adults tend to absorb fewer vitamins from their diet.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of B12 deficiency usually entails a blood test to determine the level of vitamins. If the level is found to be low, treatment can involve oral supplementation or, in severe cases, injection of B12. Targeting the underlying cause, whether it's dietary or absorption-related, is fundamental to long-term care. Most patients begin to notice relief from symptoms, such as improved thinking and enhanced energy levels, within weeks of beginning treatment.
Deficiency in Vitamin B12 is more prevalent than most are aware of and can really impact mental acuity and overall health. Identifying such symptoms as long-standing brain fog early and obtaining proper testing and treatment will avoid complications and repair cognitive function effectively.
