Vitamin D deficiency and Fibroids: 5 important facts to know

Worldwide, millions of women suffer from Uterine fibroids, that are benign tumors that grow in, or on the muscular wall of the uterus. While many women do not even know that they have them, others go through heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or other issues that require treatment to get rid of the fibroids. On the other hand, do you know that Vitamin D deficiency can also cause uterine fibroids? Here are some facts you must know about the connection of Vitamin D and fibroids...

2/9

Low Vitamin D in fibroid patients

There has been enough research to prove that uterine fibroid patients show substantially lower vitamin D concentrations, than women who do not have fibroids. Scientific evidence indicates that vitamin D deficiency might indeed, contribute to fibroid development. The connection between vitamin D deficiency and fibroid growth becomes more evident, as the bigger the size of fibroid, the lower the level of Vitamin D was found in the body.

3/9

Vitamin D prevents cell growth

Vitamin D exists as a compound, which controls both cell growth and death within body tissues. The body’s cellular regulatory process becomes disturbed, when vitamin D levels become insufficient. When this happens, uterus cells start multiplying beyond their usual capacity, leading to fibroids.

Studies say that Vitamin D plays a key role in curbing cell proliferation, and increasing programmed cell death. When the body is deficient in this vitamin, the protective mechanisms fail or weaken, that result in the growth and enlargement of fibroids. Research indicates vitamin D also affects hormone levels, including estrogen and progesterone, which play roles in fibroid development.

4/9

Supplementation can help

Current clinical research indicates that vitamin D supplements can both decrease fibroid dimensions, and prevent their growth. A clinical trial proved that women with small fibroids, received positive results from vitamin D supplementation, as their fibroids soon decreased in size. This shows that vitamin D presents a safe and affordable solution for fibroid management, even though research on the subject is still ongoing and more information is awaited.

However, a word of caution. Women with fibroids who have vitamin D deficiency, should consult their doctor about vitamin D levels before starting supplements. The use of vitamin D supplements however, cannot replace full fibroid treatment, because severe cases need medical or surgical interventions.

5/9

Certain groups at risk

The occurrence of vitamin D deficiency spreads across different populations, yet it reaches its peak among women who develop fibroids. On the other hand, darker-skinned women, specifically African-American women, are unable to make enough Vitamin D naturally. This population demonstrates a higher incidence of fibroids, alongside lower vitamin D levels, which suggests an association between these two factors.

The combination of limited sun exposure, alongside obesity and a poor diet, leads to vitamin D deficiency in women.

6/9

Monitoring is important

Women need to take proper care of their vitamin D levels, because it regulates fibroid growth, as well as bone health and even your mood! For this, one can take care of the following

Sunlight exposure: People who spend 10-15 minutes under the sun each day, allow their bodies to naturally create vitamin D.

Diet: A diet rich in fatty fish, and fortified dairy products and eggs is good for Vitamin D.

Supplements: These should be recommended by a doctor, and should be taken in the prescribed dose only, to prevent Vitamin D toxicity.

7/9

What does the deficiency of vitamin d cause?

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a range of health issues, primarily affecting bone health due to its crucial role in calcium and phosphate absorption. In children, severe deficiency causes rickets, a condition where bones become soft and weak, leading to deformities like bowed legs. In adults, it can result in osteomalacia, characterized by bone pain, muscle weakness, and an increased risk of fractures, and also contributes to osteoporosis, a condition of weakened bones. Beyond skeletal health, low vitamin D levels have been linked to increased susceptibility to infections, fatigue, muscle aches, and even mood disorders like depression, though more research is needed to fully understand some of these associations.

Checked out

It is important to get checked out at a doctor if you suspect you have fibroids
