This is the best time of the day to soak in sunlight for Vitamin D (and it's not 7 am)
Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, a nutrient critical for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. The ultraviolet B (UVB) rays in sunlight trigger the production of vitamin D in your skin. Contrary to the popular belief that morning sunlight is more effective for vitamin D synthesis, sunlight at 7 a.m. is not likely to be very beneficial for vitamin D. The sun angle at this time is too low and, hence, UVB rays are filtered by the atmosphere of the Earth. At such a time, the light that you get is not very strong in order to synthesize vitamin D. It is at mid-morning when the angle of the sun permits more direct exposure to UVB rays that it is most appropriate for this purpose.
Right sunlight exposure means nourishing the body with vitamin D
Vitamin D is often called the "sunshine vitamin" because our bodies can produce it naturally when exposed to sunlight. It plays a pivotal role in:- Aiding calcium absorption and maintaining bone density.
- It enhances one's immunity and reduces the risk of autoimmune diseases.
- Reducing symptoms of depression and fostering mental wellbeing.
- Regulating blood pressure and preventing heart-related issues.
Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency is prevalent, especially in urban areas where lifestyles limit direct sun exposure. Incorporating regular mid-morning sunlight into your routine can significantly improve your levels.
Which is the right time, then?
The best time to soak in sunlight is often misunderstood. While early morning hours, like 7 a.m., are commonly advocated, the optimal time to maximize benefits, particularly for vitamin D synthesis, lies closer to mid-morning — typically between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. During this period, the sun’s UVB rays, essential for vitamin D production, are at their most effective angle, allowing your body to absorb sunlight without overexposure. Here’s why this timeframe is ideal and how to make the most of it.In countries like India, mid-morning sunlight is particularly valuable. One should note that the sun tends to be strong enough year-round, even during winter, to meet the vitamin D needs. However, the intensity may vary, so one needs to adjust the exposure time accordingly.
How to soak in sunlight properly?
Mid-morning is a convenient time for many people to step outside and enjoy the sun. There are several ways one can make it a habit to get sunlight during this time. Incorporate outdoor activities like yoga, walking, or gardening into your mid-morning routine. Ensure you are in an area where sunlight isn’t obstructed by buildings or trees. Wear clothing that exposes more skin, like short sleeves, to maximize UVB absorption. If you’re spending time outdoors, especially in warmer regions, keep a bottle of water handy.end of article
