Vitamin D supplements should be taken in the morning; doctor explains why

Benefits of vitamin D supplements

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin important for bone health. It is also essential for maintaining a strong immune system.

For those low in vitamin D levels, increasing intake may also reduce depression and improve strength. If you’re thinking about taking Vitamin D supplements, it is important to consult your doctor first whether you need them or not, and how much dosage you should take.

According to health experts, the time of day is also important when it comes to vitamin D supplements.

Right time to take them

According to Dr Ross Perry, the supplement “should be taken in the morning,” he told Express UK.

Dr Perry explained, “This is because if we’re getting Vitamin D naturally from the sun, we are synthesizing it during the day so it’s better to be taken in the morning.”

“The main source of Vitamin D is the sun. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to lack of energy and fatigue, so it’s only natural that by getting your daily dose via the sun’s natural exposure it will boost energy levels,” he added.

Sunlight is very important

We get most of our vitamin D from sunlight exposure. In summertime, simple exposure of arms and legs two to three times a week for 15-20 minutes is sufficient.

The best time to soak yourself in the sun to get the maximum vitamin D is between 10 am to 3 pm. At midday, the sun is at its highest point and the body may be able to manufacture vitamin D most efficiently in less time.

Vitamin D food sources

In winter time, especially if you live in places where adequate sunlight is not available, you can get your vitamin D supply through foods such as:

-Salmon

-Red meat

-Egg yolks

-Liver

-Fortified foods

Do not go overboard

Taking too much vitamin D can also have a negative impact on your body. It can lead to calcium build up which can weaken the bones and damage the heart as well as kidneys.

Dr Perry added, “This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, the elderly and children aged 11-17. Children between one and 10 years shouldn’t exceed more than 50 micrograms with infants under 12 not exceeding more than 25 micrograms.”

6/6

Who is more vulnerable

While anyone can develop a vitamin D deficiency, some people are more vulnerable than others. Vitamin D deficiency has more impact on post-menopausal women, compared to men.

People who are obese and those who are older than age 65 may also have lower levels of vitamin D due to their diets, little sun exposure or other factors.
