What is UTI?

A urinary tract infection is a type of infection that affects the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Its symptoms include a persistent urge to urinate, a burning feeling while urinating, urine that looks cloudy or has blood in it and pelvic pain.

UTIs are sometimes accompanied by fever, nausea, and vomiting, and may be mistaken for other conditions. They predominantly affect women and have a high rate of recurrence, with 25 to 30 per cent of women experiencing reinfection within six months.

Why are UTI reinfections common?

Recurring urinary tract infections are known as persistent or chronic UTIs. Their symptoms may return in as little as a month after infection and recur several times throughout the year.
Recurrent UTIs are caused by the spread of E. coli bacteria in the urinary tract system. Its causal factors include delayed or infrequent urination, diarrhea, difficulty cleaning the urethra, and sexual intercourse. Here are some ways in which you can prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs):

3/7

Increase water intake

A study has found that increasing daily fluid intake results in nearly 50% fewer chances of a UTI reinfection in women. Water is the most suitable choice when it comes to detoxifying the body. Drinking more water causes frequent urination, which flushes bacteria out of the urinary tract before an infection can develop. Sufficient water intake also helps in diluting the harmful bacteria.

4/7

Urinate regularly

Delaying the urge to urinate allows bacteria to form and spread through the urinary tract. It also weakens the bladder’s muscles, which causes difficulty in emptying it completely. Not urinating at regular intervals increases the likelihood of recurrent UTIs and can be prevented by increasing the intake of fluids, fruits and vegetables.

5/7

Practice proper hygiene

Maintaining hygiene is the key to reducing the recurrence of UTIs as it reduces the spread of bacteria. Proper hygiene can be maintained by cleaning the genital area after sexual intercourse, avoiding non-breathable undergarments, and avoiding long baths, as they can help in spreading bacteria.

6/7

Avoid products that cause irritation

Products with harsh chemicals and scents can irritate the genital area and disrupt the natural balance of bacteria. Avoiding the use of abrasive cleaning products and perfumes around the genital area, coupled with appropriate clothing and hygiene, can significantly reduce the risk of UTIs.

7/7

Eat probiotic-rich foods

Probiotics are good bacteria that prevent the growth of other harmful microorganisms and thus contain the spread of urinary tract infections. Eating probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt, curd, and fermented rice helps combat UTI reinfection.
