Possible causes of foul-smelling vagina

A mild vaginal odor is normal and shouldn't be of any concern. However, an obnoxious, fishy-smelling vagina can be a big turn off and can mean something more than just a hygiene alert.

Several health issues can bring about changes to your sexual and reproductive organs, which is why any noticeable symptom should be taken into consideration. This includes a fishy vaginal odor. If you're wondering what you're going through, then here's what you need to know.

Vaginitis could be a possible cause

The most common cause of fishy vaginal odor is vaginitis, which is an inflammation of the vagina that can cause symptoms such as discharge, itching and pain. This occurs due to a change in the balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection. Furthermore, menopause can lead to reduced estrogen level, which can cause vaginitis.

Let us discuss some of the most common types of vaginitis that could be causing a fishy vaginal smell.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that occurs due to an overgrowth of bacteria which are naturally found in the vagina. This tension in the natural balance of the vagina leads to inflammation, leading to symptoms such as vaginal pain, itching, or burning along with a thin white or gray discharge and a strong fish-like odor, especially after sex.

Trichomoniasis

According to Mayo Clinic, trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite. Women, who contract this infection, experience varied symptoms including a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination, as per the health body.

When to see a doctor?

In order to confirm your diagnosis, you must look at all other common vaginal infection symptoms that may accompany a fishy odor. This includes a grayish white, greenish yellow, or white vaginal discharge, which leads to itchiness and irritation. You may also experience a fishy odor after sex or a burning sensation while peeing. If you experience any or all of these symptoms, make sure to visit a doctor.

How to reduce your risk?

While anyone can get bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, it can be prevented with healthy habits. These include:

- Practicing good sexual health hygiene

- Not douching

- Wearing cotton underwear that is not very tight

- Drinking plenty of water

- Most importantly, practice safe sex by using condoms
