How can the eyes indicate a disease?

The eyes don’t just reflect emotion; they also mirror what’s happening inside the body. Nutrition expert Deepshikha Sharma recently explained in a social media post that several nutritional deficiencies and diseases first show subtle signs in the eyes. Each clue, if noticed early, can help prevent bigger health concerns.
Here’s all we need to know about what these signs mean and how simple foods can help heal from within.

2/11

Yellow eyes

A yellowish tint in the eyes mostly points to liver overload or poor bile flow. Sharma explains that this happens when the liver struggles to clear toxins effectively.

What helps: Adding amla, beetroot, and turmeric to the diet supports liver detoxification enzymes and improves bile flow. These foods also fight oxidative stress, helping the eyes regain their natural white sheen.

3/11

Eye tags

Small, soft tags or bumps near the eyelids may indicate high LDL cholesterol. They form when fat deposits accumulate under the skin around the eyes.

What helps: Oats, garlic, and walnuts are known to lower LDL levels and improve blood circulation. Regular intake can gradually reduce cholesterol build-up and improve skin health around the eyes.

4/11

Pale inner eyelids

When the inner side of the lower eyelid looks pale instead of pink, it may hint at anaemia or low haemoglobin. This happens when blood lacks enough red cells to carry oxygen efficiently.

What helps: Foods like beetroot, pomegranate, and garden cress seeds are rich in iron and vitamin C, helping boost haemoglobin levels naturally.

5/11

Dark circles

While sleepless nights often get the blame, persistent dark circles can also signal low iron. Iron supports oxygen flow to tissues, and when it drops, the skin under the eyes darkens due to poor circulation.

What helps: Dates, moringa powder, and soaked raisins are powerful iron-rich foods that help brighten under-eye areas from within.

6/11

Blurred vision

Struggling to see clearly, especially in dim light, may point to a vitamin A deficiency. This nutrient keeps the retina healthy and prevents dryness.

What helps: Moringa leaves, amla, and ghee provide natural vitamin A and antioxidants that protect the eyes and sharpen vision.

7/11

Bulging eyes

Prominent or bulging eyes can be a sign of hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland becomes overactive. It can lead to inflammation and puffiness around the eyes.

What helps: Foods like flaxseeds, broccoli, and egg yolk support thyroid balance and contain omega-3s that calm inflammation.

8/11

Watery eyes

Constant tearing or watery eyes without any irritation can signal a lack of vitamin B2 (riboflavin). This vitamin maintains moisture balance and prevents eye dryness.

What helps: Including almonds, milk, and mushrooms ensures adequate B2 intake and keeps eyes comfortably moist.

9/11

Eye twitching

Frequent eye twitching or fluttering often comes from low magnesium, which affects nerve and muscle function.

What helps: Pumpkin seeds, bananas, and spinach are rich in magnesium and help relax muscles, reducing spasms and tension.

10/11

Puffy eyes

When eyes appear swollen, especially in the morning, the reason may be excess salt leading to water retention.

What helps: Natural diuretics like cucumber, watermelon, and coriander water flush out excess sodium and reduce inflammation, soothing puffiness naturally.
