Today more and more individuals are moving towards a holistic lifestyle, with a focus on using alternative therapies. In Ayurveda, we have a very effective therapy called Detox Panchakarma Therapy. Panchakarma is more than just therapy - it's a love letter to ourselves, telling us that we deserve the best version of ourselves, even after the festivities are over.
Panchakarma, which translates to "five actions," is a comprehensive detoxification and rejuvenation program that aims to restore balance and harmony to the body, mind, and spirit. There are five cleansing procedures in Detox Panchkarma - Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana.
1. Vaman (Emesis therapy) - This therapy refers to removing the toxins using vomiting. Vamana treatment is given after preparative procedures. Vamana therapy is usually given to a person with Kapha imbalance diseases. Vamana therapy may take 3 – 7 days.
2. Virechan (Purgative therapy) - This therapy refers to removing toxins using purgation. Virechana therapy is also given after the preparative procedure. Virechana therapy is usually given to Pitta imbalance diseases.
Virechana therapy may take from 3 – 7 days.
3. Sneha Basti (Anuvasan) - Anuvasana Basti is also known as Sneha Basti (Sneha = Medicated fats, basically ghee and oil). Here, fats or oils are managed as purification to treat Vata dosha aggravation issues.
4. Niruha Basti (Aasthaapana Basti)a - Niruha Basti is an Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment wherein decoction blended in with honey, rock salt, Medicated ghee, and so forth is managed through the anal route, similar to an enema. It is also called Asthapana basti or kshayavasti. Since this Basti expels (eliminates) the morbid Doshas or sicknesses from the body, it is called NIRUHA BASTI (Niruha - To take out).
4. Nasya therapy - Instilling powders or Ayurvedic liquids through the nose is called Nasya treatment. It is used for ailments in nose, ears, throat etc.
5. Raktamokshana - Therapeutic Raktamokshana, also known as toxic bloodletting or leech therapy, involves extracting impure blood from specific areas of the body. This process helps eliminate toxins responsible for various skin and bodily ailments. Typically, 2 to 8 ounces of blood are removed during the procedure. Bloodletting is particularly effective for managing Pitta-related disorders, including issues with the skin, liver and spleen, as well as conditions like gout, headaches, and hypertension.
This multifaceted approach involves a series of gentle, yet powerful therapies that work to eliminate accumulated toxins, known as "ama," from the body while simultaneously nourishing and rejuvenating the body's cells and tissues.
This is an extensive cleansing program and a good time to implement this is after festivals like Diwali or weddings, where one can have the tendency to indulge in oily and tasty food. As the festive lights dim and the echoes of celebration settle, many of us find ourselves grappling with the aftermath of the indulgence. This takes a toll on our body and our digestive systems scream for a break.
