Morning routine for people with diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that leads to too much sugar in the blood. For people with diabetes, a lot of work goes into managing this condition to prevent any complications. Incorporating a healthy morning routine can help in stabilizing blood sugar levels throughout the day. Here are some healthy habits you should follow after waking up. Consult your doctor before making any fundamental changes.

2/7

Drink water

Starting the day with proper hydration sets the stage for better health, especially for individuals managing diabetes. Drinking an ample amount of water upon waking helps kick start your metabolism and aids in regulating blood sugar levels. Dehydration can increase blood sugar levels, increasing risk of complications. Opting for water over sugary beverages is advisable, as it not only prevents unnecessary spikes in blood sugar but also supports overall health.

3/7

Have soaked methi seeds and cinnamon

Methi seeds or fenugreek seeds help in reducing fasting blood sugar and improve glucose tolerance. Cinnamon also helps in reducing insulin resistance. Soak 1 tsp methi seeds and 1/4 tsp cinnamon in water overnight and consume it the next morning on an empty stomach. Consult your doctor before following the routine.

4/7

Don't skip breakfast

Breakfast holds immense importance for individuals with diabetes. Skipping breakfast can disrupt blood sugar levels and lead to overeating later in the day. Choose a breakfast rich in protein, fiber and containing healthy fats and low to moderate amounts of carbs. A healthy breakfast helps in maintaining steady blood sugar levels throughout the morning, providing sustained energy and preventing sudden spikes or crashes.

5/7

Avoid sugar in your beverage

Avoid added sugars in your morning beverages, like coffee or tea. Opting for unsweetened alternatives or natural sweeteners can help individuals maintain better control over their blood sugar levels. High sugar intake can cause rapid spikes in glucose levels, which can be detrimental for those with diabetes. Choosing beverages without added sugars supports a stable blood sugar profile and aligns with a healthier lifestyle.

6/7

Take your medicines

It is important to take your medications timely, whether oral medications or insulin injections, as prescribed by your doctor. Taking medications at the recommended time is critical for controlling blood sugar levels. Incorporating medication intake into the morning routine (as prescribed by your doctor) helps establish consistency, ensuring that medication efficacy remains steady throughout the day.

7/7

Practice yoga

Yoga offers multiple benefits for people with diabetes. Engaging in yoga sessions in the morning can positively impact blood sugar levels and overall well-being. Yoga promotes relaxation, reduces stress hormones, and enhances insulin sensitivity, contributing to better glycemic control. If you are new to yoga, practice under guidance and supervision of a yoga expert.
