​How do you reduce uric acid levels?

Excess of anything is pretty bad and so are the levels of uric acid in our body. High uric acid levels in the body can lead to various health-related issues, including kidney stones. While we have several medications that can help effectively manage uric acid but making small lifestyle adjustments can be equally effective in maintaining healthy levels. Here are 6 daily habits we can add in our lifestyle that will help in reducing uric acid levels naturally.

​What is the role of uric acid?

Uric acid is a result of the digestion of purine-containing meals. Purines are naturally occurring chemicals found in certain diets that are also generated and degraded by the body. Normally, uric acid is filtered out by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. However, if the body consumes too much purine or is unable to clear it adequately, uric acid can accumulate in the blood, causing a variety of health issues. According to the National Library of Medicine, the typical range for uric acid is 3.4 to 7 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) for men and 2.4 to 6 mg/dL for women, but it can range from 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dL.

​Sipping on a cup of coffee

Drinking a cup of coffee might do more than just wake you up in the morning. Regularly consuming coffee can help lower uric acid levels in the body. Coffee contains antioxidants that may reduce uric acid production and improve kidney function, which is important for removing excess uric acid. But keep in mind that always drink coffee in recommended amounts and refrain from adding too much sugar or high-fat creamers, which could have the opposite effect.

Balance your insulin levels in the body

Our insulin levels have an important take on how our body manages uric acid. High insulin levels can lead to an increase in uric acid retention, which may lead to conditions like gout. Try focusing on a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins which will help in balancing the levels of insulin in the body. Regular meals that avoid high spikes in sugar or refined carbs can make a noticeable difference.

Try to avoid purine-rich food

Certain foods are high in purines, a compound that the body breaks down into uric acid. When we reduce the intake of these foods, it automatically leads to a significant drop in uric acid levels. Common purine-rich foods include organ meats, red meat, shellfish, and certain types of fish. Instead, focus on consuming low-purine options such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This does not in any sense mean that we need to cut out protein entirely—plant-based proteins such as legumes and nuts are great alternatives.

​Include vitamin C in your diet


Vitamin C has been proven to help lower uric acid levels by helping the kidneys in flushing out the excess. Citrus fruits like oranges, and lemons are rich in Vitamin C and make a great addition to our diet. We can also include supplements if needed. A daily glass of orange juice or lemon water in the morning can be particularly beneficial, as it not only provides Vitamin C but also supports overall immunity and metabolism.

​Get up and get going

A lifestyle that has no physical activity is like a ticking time bomb. It can contribute to higher uric acid levels and various other health issues. Try to add light exercises such as walking into the daily routine. It can improve blood circulation and support better kidney function within the first few weeks. Walking helps flush out uric acid by increasing blood flow to your kidneys, aiding in the filtration process. Aim for at least 30 minutes of walking every day to see long-term benefits.
