What is Ashwagangha and know all about its benefits

Ayurveda defines ashwagandha as a powerful herb that has the ability to heal the body and cure it of various illnesses.

Scientifically, it is known as Withania somnifera and is considered an adaptogen, which is a substance that helps the body respond and adapt to stressors.

The Indian ginseng has been used as a traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for eons and is said to not only ease pain and inflammation, but can also help treat insomnia and boost overall health.

Improved sleep

As per many Ayurvedic experts ashwagandha roots are said to improve sleep quality. This has been attributed to the compound, namely triethylene glycol, naturally present in ashwagandha, that researchers believe may bring on sleepiness.

According to a 2020 study published in the ‘Sleep Medicine’ journal, after taking ashwagandha for six weeks, participants in one actigraphy-based study described their sleep as being 72% better.

Reduced stress

As discussed, ashwagandha contains an adaptogen, which helps the body cope with stress. Experts believe it helps regulate mediators of stress such as heat shock proteins (Hsp70), cortisol, and stress-activated c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK-1)

However, more research is needed to confirm whether ashwagandha can in fact be used as a treatment for relieving stress.

Better athletic performance and enhanced energy levels

There's a chance that ashwagandha may help increase your muscle mass and improve your performance. Earlier research has suggested that the traditional herb may increase muscle power and lower body fat percentage.

An analysis of five studies published in the journal 'Nutrients' in 2020 found that taking ashwagandha significantly enhanced maximum oxygen consumption in healthy adults and athletes.

May help boost libido and fertility in men

Ashwagandha is said to not only improve one's libido, but can also facilitate the healthy production of testosterone. That said, ashwagandha can help men regain their sex drive and also cure infertility. Research has also highlighted that taking ashwagandha may improve sperm quality by realigning reproductive hormone levels.

6/6

Alleviates inflammation in the body

The Indian ginseng is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which helps treat severe inflammation in the body. Studies have suggested that the herb may produce immune cells that protect the body against inflammation-causing infections and help the body stay healthy.
