Morning-after rescue: Natural remedies to recover from Diwali drinks

Diwali celebrations fill us with a feeling of “all or nothing”, and many of us forget the memo about moderation. What comes next is the post-Diwali morning and a head-heavy hangover. To ease the unpleasantness of headache, fatigue, and nausea, natural remedies can come to be of great help. Below we list some science-backed natural remedies to help you save the day after Diwali drinks.

2/8

Turmeric

Turmeric is packed with an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich compound called curcumin. A research review published in ScienceDirect suggests that curcumin helps protect liver cells from alcohol-induced stress and reduces inflammation.
Boil half teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of water. Strain and sip. Add lemon juice for additional flavour.

3/8

Ginger

When post-Diwali celebration comes with nausea, ginger can be a go-to remedy. NIH research suggests that ginger is full of active compounds like, gingerols and shogaols, and these can help reduce hangover-related issues.
Chewing a small slice of ginger can provide relief or one may prepare ginger tea by boiling freshly prepared ginger pate in water.

4/8

Lemon water

Nothing beats this classic saviour. Nimbu pani helps restore hydration, is rich in antioxidants and helps alkalize the body. The gentle dose of vitamin C from lemon water helps detoxify the body.
To consume, simply squeeze a lemon into a glass of water. Add a pinch of salt (optional).

5/8

Ajwain water

Many of us have seen our elders chewing ajwain after heavy meals. Well, there’s science behind it. Ajwain is known for its digestive properties, helping to relieve acidity, gas, and indigestion. This traditional remedy can relieve the effects of alcohol.
Add a pinch of ajwain to boiling water and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Strain and consume a glass of water after a night of heavy celebration. This remedy can not just help for alcohol’s hangover, but also for the festive feast.

6/8

Curd rice

This one's a combination of probiotics, hydration, and gentle carbohydrates. Curd rice is a comfort food for many Indians.
To prepare curd rice, mix a cup of cooked rice with a cup of plain yogurt. Add some curry leaves and a pinch of salt for some flavour.

7/8

Coconut water

The most common effect of a hangover is dehydration. Coconut water is rich in electrolytes and antioxidants. These properties make it an effective natural remedy to cure hydration.
Drinking a glass of fresh coconut water in the morning may help. Add slices of fresh fruits for a refreshing twist.
