What a sex therapist wants you to know

WHAT A SEX THERAPIST WANTS YOU TO KNOW: Sex is as much about our bodies as it is about our minds. Because it a taboo in our society, there are many impediments that are formed in peoples’ minds towards sex. It is morally wrought and socially unmentionable and so, despite the fact that sex is a need for our bodies, a lot of people are unable to enjoy it.

Erectile dysfunction can be due to psychological reasons!

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION CAN BE DUE TO PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS: The psychological renditions of sex can be seen in the way it can lead to erectile dysfunction. The disorder is often caused by psychological impediments.

So, there are things about sex that a sex therapist would want you to know, things you must unlearn and get over. Sex is a beautiful experience and we need to do both, believe in it and feel it.

Talk about sex

TALK ABOUT SEX: Yes, communication is the most important part of sex! Because the subject is taboo, people talk only superficially to even psychotherapists about the subject. Mentioning what is hindering your performance or how your partner responds or doesn’t respond is easy to talk, but the real challenge is to talk about what you feel during sex. If there are any touches that arouse you, any fantasies you would like to try, any kinks that arouse you – these are the difficult parts to talk about. One must open about these if they want them to truly connect with their partner.

It’s about brain to a great extent

IT'S ABOUT BRAIN TO A GREAT EXTENT: Sex, as mentioned above, is half about physicality and the other have about emotions and mind. It is really important to know how you and your partner feel about sex. You may perceive an experience one way while your partner may perceive it completely differently. So, ask yourself questions like what exactly do you like about sex, why you have it with whom you have it and so on. Some introspection is always good.

Nothing is taboo!

NOTHING IS TABOO: There are many things that are considered ‘abnormal’ as per social standards. However, they may not be so as per science. So, it is important that you open your heart to a therapist. They come across all kinds of kinks and fetishes and in psychotherapy, there is no room for judgement and morality. Also, they are bound to maintain your anonymity. They are there to help and it is only sensible to tell them exactly how you feel.

Sex changes with time

SEX CHANGES WITH TIME: Though we may desire the passion we had when we started having sex with a new partner to remain till the relationship lasts, it will not. When a relationship is long term, sex becomes an everyday act. It will be an expression of intimacy and love more than anything else. So, expect the initial butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling to fade away.

Sex does not exist in isolation

SEX DOES NOT EXIST IN ISOLATION: By this we mean that emotions are equally important and it is often difficult to disassociate the two and simply focus on sex. For this same reason, a break up can impact your view of sex in a very huge way. So, try to understand that sex does not exist in isolation from other things.

You are beautiful below the belt

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL BELOW THE BELT: A study that was conducted about what participants felt about their women's nether parts concluded that every partner loved the unique features of their woman's labia, its shape, color, scent etc. There is no standard for how your nether region should look. So, remember you are beautiful in your own unique way. (All images from Shutterstock)
