Not sexually attracted to your partner?

Living in an era where getting into a romantic relationship is just a swipe away, emotional bonding before a physical one is often underrated. But not everyone can indulge in a casual relationship and sex before they develop an emotional bond with their partner. A few might need a strong emotional bonding with their partner before getting sexually intimate. Relatable much? So, be glad as you now have a word for your type of sexuality. It is called demisexuality. Demisexuals fall under the spectrum of asexuals (those who have negligible sexual desires) as demisexuals can only fancy people whom they know closely. They can get sexually attracted only in specific conditions.

What does demisexuality mean?

WHAT DOES DEMISEXUALITY MEAN? A website dedicated to asexuality defines a demisexual as, “A person who does not experience sexual attraction unless they form a strong emotional connection with someone. It's more commonly seen in but by no means confined to romantic relationships. Nevertheless, this term does not mean that demisexuals have an incomplete or half-sexuality, nor does it mean that sexual attraction without emotional connection is required for a complete sexuality."

3/9

It’s just not about sex

IT’S JUST NOT ABOUT SEX: You should also know that demisexuality is just not about sex, it’s more of a desire and arousal concept. According to the experts, demisexuals may not always be interested in having sex with the partners they love. This is why it falls under asexuality. While there are many people who start to develop sexual attraction towards others at around puberty, demisexuals usually lack this trait.

Four signs you can be demisexual

Does knowing the meaning of demisexuality ring a bell for you? Read further to know if you or anyone you know has the same characteristics. Identify these 4 signs and know if you or anyone you know is demisexual

5/9

A strong emotional bonding with your partner

A STRONG EMOTIONAL BONDING WITH YOUR PARTNER: There are chances that you can’t connect to the person you’re dating. There is no emotional bonding and no physical attraction. For demisexuals, much before the physical aspect comes emotional closeness. Unless they feel a deep emotional connection with their partner, they can’t have any sexual relationship.

6/9

Strong bond with friends

STRONG BOND WITH FRIENDS: Demisexuals have a strong bond with their friends. They may not have many friends and it could just be to maintain a stable and sturdy relationship with people around them. They may not prefer dozens of friends. And whosoever is their friend enjoys a rich bond of friendship.

7/9

They are often accused of high standards

THEY ARE OFTEN ACCUSED OF HIGH STANDARDS: Others might think that you have some unreasonable standards when it comes to dating or choosing partners. But these high standards can be a sign of demisexuality. You may not form an emotional bond with everyone, which others might consider irrational. Demisexuals have rigorous standards while choosing a partner which only after emotional closeness can lead to physical attraction. You should not let others' misconception rule your love life.

8/9

Demisexuals can strongly relate to asexual people

DEMISEXUALS CAN STRONGLY RELATE TO ASEXUAL PEOPLE: As demisexuality comes under the spectrum of asexuality, demisexuals can strongly connect themselves to asexual people. They can also feel no sexual attraction or no urge to have sex. But it should be noted that demisexuals are not exclusively asexual people. After an emotional bonding, they can feel sexual attraction towards their partner.

What do critics say?

WHAT DO CRITICS SAY? Some people claim that those who are choosy about the ones they choose to sleep with are labelled as ‘demisexuals’. A few people have the opinion that demisexuality is a lifestyle choice and these people have a low sex drive. But this is not what demisexuals describe their sexuality as. They say that they are neither choosy nor have a low sex drive and it is only that they prioritize an emotional bond over a sexual one.
