As per the study by Holland and Barrett, ingesting caffeine can help in burning belly fat. The study cites another study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that investigated caffeine and its effects on the metabolic rate of obese people.

Metabolism is a process by which your body converts what you consume into energy. Boosting your metabolism can help you burn calories and lose weight, says National Health Service.

​Analysis

For the study, people with normal weight were given a coffee content of 8 gm per kg of their body weight. It was observed that their metabolic rate increased significantly during the next three hours after consuming caffeine, suggested the research.

The fat burning process increased in the last one hour as compared to the control group that was given a placebo.

Obese people and another control group were given a caffeine content of 4 mg per kg of their body weight. Both the groups experienced an increase in their metabolic rate, however, only the control group had an increase in the fat-burning rate.

​Verdict

The research concluded that coffee increases metabolic rate in both normal-weight and obese individuals, with greater fat burning in people with normal weight.

Other studies have also found that continuous consumption of coffee reduced abdominal visceral fat.

​Dietary tips

To burn fat, you need to burn more calories than you consume and eat healthy foods. Eat more beans, pulses, eggs and fish. Limit the amount of unsaturated oil and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water each day.
