Focus on the wholesome benefits exercises give us

When it comes to workout forms, we mostly focus on the loss of weight. This is partly attributed to our belief that exercises only help in reducing weight and also partly due to the unawareness around weight and health.

A report from Harvard recommends 5 best and effective exercises for all. It also emphasizes the other health benefits these exercises have.

​Swimming​

Swimming is the best form of workout, the Harvard report says. "Swimming is good for individuals with arthritis because it's less weight-bearing," explains Dr. I-Min Lee, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Swimming is a wholesome workout that works on the entire body, it builds endurance, tones muscles, improves strength and increases the heart rate.

Unlike other forms of workout, swimming is good for those who have arthritis, injury, disability and are unable to do high impact exercises.

It is also believed that swimming can improve mental health as well.

​Tai Chi​


Tai Chi is a form of martial art which comprises several movements requiring the body to swiftly transform from one form to another.

Tai Chi improves mood, induces better sleep, reduces stress, aids weight loss, and cuts down the risk of cognition in older individuals. It is also said that Tai Chi reduces the risk of falling in older people.

​Strength training​


If you are someone who believes that strength training is only for those who have a good build you are wrong.

It is very important to use muscles and "If you don't use muscles, they will lose their strength over time," says Dr Lee and explains that The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, so it's easier to maintain your weight.

​Walking​

Several research studies have talked about the importance of walking. This low impact exercise helps the health in a way no other exercise does. It is easy to do and does not require a lavish set up.

It is believed that walking 5000-10000 steps per day can reduce the risk of several life threatening diseases.

​Kegel exercises​


Kegel exercises are known to work wonders on the pelvic muscles. It helps prevent incontinence and benefits men and women equally.

The correct way to do Kegel exercises is to squeeze the muscles that are used to pass urine and hold it for 2-3 seconds. This can be done 4 to 5 times a day.
