5 hacks to keep cockroach away from kitchen permanently

Cockroaches form one of the major household pests that invade kitchens in most homes. These insects usually flourish during humid and rainy weather conditions. While these creatures are unsightly, they could pose other threats, such as contaminating foods, spreading bacteria, and causing allergic reactions among certain individuals. Cockroaches are attracted to kitchens mainly because these spaces offer them easy access to food crumbs, moisture, darkness, and warmth. Although chemical pest management practices are common, most homeowners prefer simpler methods to deter the pests. Consistency is always regarded as better than using costly sprays by professionals. Here are five hacks that are frequently used by most households to repel cockroaches from their kitchens.

2/6

Do not allow any dirty dishes in the sink overnight

Most of the time, leaving unwashed plates in the sink attracts cockroaches. This happens since there would be food leftovers as well as moisture that would create a favourable feeding environment for the pests, especially during nights when kitchens are empty. Even small crumbs left on the dishes can attract insects to come again and again. The experts always recommend the practice of washing dishes before bedtime and drying the sink. By ensuring a relatively cleaner sink area, there is no easy source of food for cockroaches in the kitchen.

3/6

Store all foods properly and avoid leaving them exposed

Another mistake that attracts cockroaches in kitchens relates to storing foods in inappropriate places. Dry foods, such as rice, flour, snacks, sugar, and leftovers usually draw a lot of attention from pests. Homeowners should store all food in sealed containers of glass, metal or thick plastic. Avoid exposing food on countertops since it will reduce the chances of pests coming in kitchens looking for their next meal.

4/6

Prevent water leaks and remove moisture

One of the main factors that makes cockroaches thrive easily inside kitchens is moisture. Such pests can even last for a very long period of time if given enough water. Therefore, it is very important to fix all leaking pipes. Kitchen floors, countertops, shelves, and sink areas should always be kept dry, especially during humid days.

5/6

Employ some smells that cockroaches hate

The other hack that some households use involves creating an environment with smells that are hated by these creatures. Examples include neem oil, cloves, peppermint and other plants that give strong smells. People who apply this method put dried bay leaves near cabinets or spray diluted peppermint oils in corners of the kitchen. Although natural repellents may not deal with the pests completely, they will help in discouraging them when coupled with proper cleaning practices.

6/6

Keep kitchen corners behind appliances cleaned

Apart from keeping kitchen surfaces clean, it is equally important to clean those hidden corners. Most pests hide in such places, especially those found behind appliances. Homeowners should move such appliances now and then to clean the corners behind them. This helps to get rid of any food leftovers and creates unfavorable conditions for breeding.
