7 beautiful winter flowers that should be planted in December

December marks the arrival of cool, crisp weather across many parts of India - a time when gardens bloom with colours and vitality. Winters offer ideal conditions for several hardy and cold-tolerant flowers. Growing winter-blooming plants not only brightens up your garden but also provides a soothing, colourful start to the cold season. Here are seven beautiful flowers that thrive when planted in December and gives great results.

2/8

Pansy

Pansies flourish in cool weather, making them ideal for December planting in India. Their bright, multicoloured blooms - often two- or three-toned - add cheerful colour to garden beds and pots. They tolerate frost and cool nights, and their compact growth suits balcony or terrace gardens. Regular watering and some sunlight help them bloom beautifully through winter.

3/8

Petunia

Petunias adapt well to cooler winter conditions in India and bloom profusely when planted in December. Their trumpet-shaped flowers come in a wide variety of vibrant colors - from pinks and purples to whites and yellows. Petunias do best in sunny spots with well-drained soil and moderate watering. With care, they can brighten gardens throughout the colder months.

4/8

Dianthus (Pinks)

Dianthus - also called “pinks” - are cold-tolerant, fragrant flowers that do well when sown in winter. Their compact size and dense foliage make them great for borders and small gardens. Their blooms, often in shades of pink, red, and white, bring a delicate charm to winter gardens. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil.

5/8

Calendula (Pot Marigold)

Calendula is a hardy flower that thrives in the cool Indian winter when planted in December. Its bright orange and yellow blooms add warmth and cheer to gardens otherwise quiet in colder months. Calendula is easy to grow and tolerates variable weather - making it ideal even for beginners. It also attracts pollinators like bees, adding ecological value.

6/8

Phlox

Certain phlox varieties grow well in cooler climates and suit winter gardening when sown around December. Phlox produces clusters of small, softly scented flowers - often in pastel tones - that create a lovely carpet or border in flower beds. With moderate watering and partial sun, phlox can thrive through winter and bring graceful blooms to the garden.

7/8

Sweet Pea

Mild winter climate is what sweet peas adore and many areas of India even winter for them to be planted in December so as to have their yield delicious flowers in spring and summer. They tree or fence out their heights with sweet smelling flowers making them the best for vertical gardens or balconies. Sweet peas are multi-coloured from very soft to strong and bring both beauty and smell. While growing, they need help like a trellis, constant watering and cool weather.

8/8

Alyssum

Alyssum is an exquisite flower, very low in height that is very winter friendly. Sowing seeds in December will give a ground cover of tiny white, pink, or purple flowers that are softly and sweetly smelling. Alyssum is able to endure frost and cold weather, hence it is best suited for edging, borders, or container gardens. It likes well-drained soil and partial sunlight.

By planting these flowers in December, we can make our garden become more lively and attractive. When the flowers start blooming it's a pleasant experience for anyone to feel and enjoy.
