8 vibrant hanging succulents to brighten up your balcony garden

Succulents are plants which are very easy to grow and of low-maintenance. Transform your balcony into a flowing trail of greenery, with hanging succulents. These versatile plants add charm, texture, and a modern touch to compact spaces like balconies. Here are eight such succulents you can grow in your balcony garden to make it more beautiful and vibrant. Let’s have a look at them !

2/9

String of pearls

String of pearls features strands of small, pea-shaped leaves spilling from baskets like a pearl necklace. It prefers bright, indirect light, sandy, well-draining soil and watering only when the top layer is dry - overwatering causes root rot. Because its stems can trail 60 - 90 cm, it adds dramatic fall to hanging planters.

3/9

Burro’s tail

Burro’s tail has thick bluish-green leaves densely packed along trailing stems, reminiscent of a donkey’s tail. It thrives in bright light (about 8 hours) and very well-draining cactus soil; it must dry fully between waterings to avoid rot. Its dramatic trailing habit makes it perfect for a hanging basket where stems can drape freely.

4/9

String of hearts

String of hearts displays delicate heart-shaped leaves on slender vines that tumble elegantly from railings. It favours bright, indirect light and well-draining soil; though drought-tolerant, it likes a little more frequent watering than more extreme succulents. Its trailing stems bring a romantic softness to balcony corners.

5/9

Ruby necklace

Ruby necklace captivates with bean-shaped leaves that blush ruby red in strong sunlight, cascading from hanging pots with vibrant colour. This succulent demands bright light, warm temperature above 10 °C and very little water between cycles to stay healthy. A shaded balcony may mute its red tones.

6/9

Trailing jade / weeping jade

Trailing jade (also called weeping jade) features fleshy, oval-shaped leaves on long trailing stems, ideal for overhanging planters. It thrives in full sun or light shade and sandy, well-draining soil, and prefers to dry between waterings. Its lush trailing habit softens hard balcony edges beautifully.

7/9

Hairy-fruited wickerware cactus

This jungle-origin cactus sends slender segmented stems cascading out of baskets, offering a soft, airy texture. Unlike desert succulents, it enjoys bright but indirect light and slightly higher humidity, making it suited for balconies with mild shade. Its unique form adds exotic character.

8/9

String of dolphins

String of dolphins charms with the little leaves that have the shape of leaping dolphins on the trailing vines. It requires bright indirect sunlight, sandy soil, and watering the soil only under the condition when it is fully dry. This funky plant will bring fun, motion and character to a hanging planter creating a point of conversation.

9/9

Heart-leaf ice plant

This trailing cactus has heart-shaped fleshy leaves and magenta-coloured flowers that are ideal to spill out of balcony pots. It grows in full sunlight or partial shade, requires little water and well-drained sandy soils. The bright blooms make it a cheerful accent.

Hanging succulents are not only a decoration but a living artwork that introduces a sense of calmness, colouring and creativity to small areas. It is their individual textures and beautiful tracks that bring your balcony to life and make it friendly. They are easy to nurture, and in turn, they pay you back with the beauty of nature that requires no effort on a daily basis.
