Best pots for plants: Terracotta vs Cement vs Plastic –which one wins?

The selection of the pot seems insignificant when it comes to gardening, yet choosing the right pot might bring a lot of benefits for the plants. Even though sunlight, proper watering, and fertile soil are crucial factors to take into account, a pot in which the plant will grow can significantly impact its overall condition. As for different types of pots, each of them has its advantages and drawbacks, and no one fits perfectly for each plant. Let's take a closer look at some of them.

2/8

Terracotta pots - breathable yet capricious

One of the most common types of pots is undoubtedly terracotta pots. They are loved by many people due to their classic appearance and breathable structure. Since these pots are made of porous material, they can provide adequate drainage, which means that the pot won't dry out even in hot weather. However, they can also lead to overwatering since the plant will lose moisture much faster. For this reason, terracotta pots might suit plants which need to stay dry.

3/8

Cement pots - solid but heavy

Speaking of pots for outside use, cement pots might turn out to be quite a good choice because they are quite solid and stable, and they will help you secure your plant even in case of strong winds. They keep moisture for a longer period of time, which means that plants that need extra watering can grow in them. On the other hand, cement pots are very heavy, which makes it rather complicated to move them.

4/8

Plastic pots – light and durable

In addition to pots made of more expensive materials, one can consider plastic pots that are affordable, light in weight, and can be moved easily. Such pots retain moisture for a long time, which makes them perfect for those who do not want to water plants very often. However, since these pots are not breathable, there is a risk that they will contribute to overwatering. Nevertheless, such pots are rather convenient.

5/8

Which pot is the best for indoor plants?

When it comes to indoor gardening, plastic and terracotta pots might be quite a good choice for them. Since terracotta pots allow excess moisture to evaporate and plastic pots retain it, the latter should be chosen if you water plants rarely and vice versa.

6/8

Which pot is the best for outdoor use?

As for outside plants, cement or terracotta pots will fit well. In case you choose cement pots for outdoor plants, you'll have to keep in mind that these plants may suffer from a lack of moisture during the dry season. Besides, cement pots might get too hot in summer.

7/8

Differences in maintenance and durability of pots

Terracotta pots require some additional care because they can be rather fragile. Cement pots can serve for a long time, yet they are hard to handle because of their heaviness. Moreover, plastic pots can be damaged under the influence of sunlight.

8/8

So, which one wins?

There’s no single winner when it comes to plant pots. Terracotta is great for airflow, cement offers strength, and plastic provides convenience. The best choice depends on your plant’s needs and your daily routine. Understanding these differences helps you make a smarter decision rather than following trends.
