How to correctly store watermelons in summer to keep them fresh, juicy, healthy and long-lasting

Summer's heat makes watermelon a juicy lifesaver, but nothing's worse than biting into a mushy, spoiled one. As Indian temperatures soar past 40°C, proper storage keeps that sweetness locked in longer.

This fruit is 92% water, so it loses crispness when exposed to humidity and heat. The slices begin to wilt, and flavors go off due to bacterial growth. Storing it properly isn't rocket science, it's just about protecting it from the sun, air, and temperature swings.

Here are some simple hacks to keep your watermelon stable this summer

2/5

Store whole Watermelons right

Keep uncut watermelons at room temperature in a cool, shady spot away from direct sunlight. This preserves their natural juiciness for 7-14 days. In scorching summers, a pantry or kitchen corner works best, avoid fridges for whole ones as cold dulls flavor and firms texture.

Place them on a breathable mat, not plastic, to prevent moisture buildup. Check for soft spots weekly, try a thump test (a deep sound means it's ripe), which helps you pick a good fruit.

3/5

Handle cut pieces quickly

Once sliced, rush cut watermelon to the fridge in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in cling film to block air and bacteria, it stays fresh up to 5 days at 4-9°C. Shallow containers cool evenly, layer with parchment between slices to avoid squishing. In humid summers, this stops sogginess quickly.

4/5

Beat the heat with cooling tricks

For extra summer survival, loosely wrap whole melons in a damp muslin cloth and place them in the coolest room spot; evaporation keeps them crisp without chilling. Avoid stacking them on top of each other; give space for airflow.

5/5

Freeze for long-term storage

Cut the rind off the watermelon and chop it into cubes. Spread them on a tray to freeze first; this stops them from sticking. Then place them into airtight bags, which helps them stay good for 6 months without getting mushy. Thaw them in the fridge for smoothies or drinks; the texture gets softer, but the taste shines in mocktails. Great for when you crave it off-season. Never refreeze after thawing to avoid germs.
