How to grow avocado plant in a pot (Simple step-by-step guide for beginners)

Avocados are gaining popularity in cooking thanks to their unique creamy taste and valuable nutritional benefits; however, gardening fans are starting to cultivate dwarf avocado trees in their apartments. Surprisingly, an avocado plant may be cultivated in a pot with patience and regular care. Although the fruit formation takes several years depending on the climate and plant variety, the avocado plant is an interesting houseplant with its glossy leaves and healthy growth. The process of growing an avocado plant is exciting for many people due to the clear sprouts and steady growth of the plant. Here is a simple step-by-step guide for growing an avocado plant in a pot at home.

2/7

Avocado – choosing a healthy seed

The process usually starts with picking up a healthy avocado seed from the fruit. After peeling the avocado carefully, gardeners should take out the seed from it without damaging it. Then, the seed needs to be washed thoroughly since leftover pieces of the pulp may promote fungi growth during the process of germination. It is essential that larger healthy seeds are likely to germinate faster than the smaller ones.

3/7

Sprouting using the toothpick method

One of the easiest methods used by beginners involves the suspension of the seed with the help of toothpicks in water. The broad bottom side of the seed should face down in water while the narrow top part should stay out of it. It is recommended to place the plant in a warm place with bright light, but not direct sunlight initially. During several weeks, the seed will start cracking, and the roots and shoots will appear gradually.

4/7

Transferring the sprouted seed into a pot

Once the roots are growing strongly and the shoot has grown to several inches, the avocado seed can be planted into a pot with soil. Medium-sized pots with drainage holes are the best option to avoid waterlogging. And it's essential to leave the upper half of the seed outside of the soil instead of burying it completely. The seed should be watered gently after planting.

5/7

Avocado plants need plenty of sunlight and water

After becoming established in the soil, avocado plants need plenty of sunlight. Terraces, balconies, or sunny spots in rooms work perfectly for potted avocado plants. One of the biggest mistakes made by beginners is overwatering since excessive watering may damage the roots of the plant. Usually, experts advise to water the avocado plant when the top layer of the soil becomes slightly dry.

6/7

Regular pruning promotes the growth of avocado plants

In general, avocado plants may grow quite large over several years; therefore, light pruning promotes bushier growth and creates an ideal shape for indoor space. Once the plant grows to a certain height, gardeners need to pinch off the top leaves to stimulate branching. Moreover, pruning improves air circulation and promotes full and healthy growth of the plant.

7/7

Growing avocados needs patience

Beginners are usually eager to see the result of growing avocado plants quickly; however, avocado trees need several years to start fruiting. In many cases, the indoor plant does not produce any fruits but remains decorative. Nevertheless, many gardeners like growing avocado plants thanks to the attractive appearance of their leaves and pleasant caring process.
