How to grow strawberries in pots in balcony garden during winters

Growing strawberries in pots during winter is a rewarding project, especially if you choose hardy varieties and provide the right care. Strawberries tolerate cool weather and even prefer mild winters to establish strong roots. With proper sunlight, well-draining soil, and protection from frost, you can enjoy fresh, sweet berries right at home even in the colder months.

2/8

Choosing the right variety

For winter balcony gardening, pick cold-tolerant varieties such as Chandler, Sweet Charlie, Camarosa, or day-neutral types like Albion and Seascape. These varieties handle fluctuating winter temperatures and produce well in containers. Day-neutral strawberries continue fruiting in cool weather, making them ideal for small urban spaces.

3/8

Selecting the pot and soil

Use pots that are at least 10-12 inches deep with multiple drainage holes to prevent root rot. Strawberries thrive in loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A mix of potting soil, cocopeat, and compost ensures ideal moisture retention without waterlogging, which is important during winter.

4/8

Planting the strawberries

Place each plant so the crown sits just above the soil line. Space them properly if using a larger container, ensuring good airflow. Water after planting and keep the soil slightly moist. Winter planting helps the roots establish before spring growth, especially in balcony conditions protected from harsh weather.

5/8

Sunlight requirements

Strawberries need at least 5-6 hours of winter sunlight to stay healthy. Position pots on a south-facing balcony to maximise light exposure. If sunlight is limited, rotate pots weekly or use reflective surfaces to redirect light. Ample winter sun helps maintain strong foliage and supports early flowering.

6/8

Watering during winters

Winter watering should be controlled - keep the soil lightly moist, not wet. Overwatering in cold weather can lead to fungal problems and root rot. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again. Use a small watering can for gentle irrigation so the crown of the plant stays dry.

7/8

Winter protection and care

While strawberries survive in cold well, balcony plants will benefit from some extra care during cold, winter nights, providing a little more protection will help your plants endure frigid nights and survive the winter. They will do well (in pots), near your walls, in some burlap or with some mulch (straw, dried leaves etc.) around their base. And, just remember, avoid exposing your plants to harsh winter winds. With some reinforcement in winter your plants should be healthier and more fruitful in the spring.

8/8

Fertilising during winters

You can apply a mild, balanced fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the winter months to help your plants grow roots. Do not use heavy nitrogen fertilisers as they will promote growth of softer leaves, which are not for the cold. Compost tea or watered down liquid organic fertilisers will work very well for container strawberries, and will help balance nutrients during winter.
