Step by step guide to grow turmeric in pots in balcony garden

Growing turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, in pots on your balcony is quite fulfilling, whereby one gets to have fresh, chemical-free spices right at home. The turmeric rhizomes are tender and keep on thriving in warm, humid conditions; they can be grown in containers even within the tiniest space. With the right pot, soil, planting technique, and care routine, you can enjoy your own homegrown turmeric.

Choose the right pot

Choose a container that's at least 30 cm deep and wide, with good holes in the bottom for drainage. The rhizomes of turmeric spread laterally through the soil and require a space to grow outward. A wide, deep container will prevent crowding of the roots and foster healthy development of the rhizome. Suitable containers would be clay, terracotta, or heavy plastic pots with holes.

Prepare the soil mix

Fill this pot with an adequately draining and nutritious soil mixture. A mixture of high-quality potting soil, compost, and cocopeat or sand to ensure draining properties will be ideal. Turmeric will also thrive in moist but not water-logged soil; rhizome root rot may develop in water-logged soil.

Select and prepare rhizomes

Use fresh turmeric rhizomes that have visible buds, from which the shoots will emerge. If a piece is large, cut it into sections, 2–3 inches long, making sure each section has at least one eye. Allow slices to air dry for a day to reduce risk of rot before planting.

Plant the rhizomes properly

Plant rhizomes with nodes facing up about 5-7 cm deep. Cover them lightly with soil and press soil lightly around them. Plant multiple pieces if you are planting them together in a bigger pot. Planting them this way makes it easy for new growth to emerge.

Provide the right light and warmth

It prefers a temperature of 20-35°C with plenty of bright, indirect light. Position it in a spot receiving morning sun or bright, shaded areas to protect tender young leaves from direct sunlight. Then, move it to an indoor or balcony location if you live in a cooler climate.

Water consistently but carefully

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Add water if the top soil layer is somewhat dry. Root rot occurs often due to excessive watering. Make certain excess water drains out.

Feed and maintain plant health

Fertilise lightly every few weeks during the growing season with a balanced organic fertiliser or compost tea. Remove any yellowing leaves to ensure the plant remains healthy and looks neat and tidy.

Harvest at the right time

It takes turmeric plants an average of 8 to 10 months to come to full maturity. Once it’s ready, turmeric can be harvested when its leaves turn yellow and die off. Carefully dig out turmeric rhizomes, wash them, and either keep some pieces aside or replant them.


Cultivating turmeric in pots in your balcony will not only be of use to you, as you get to enjoy it in various ways, but growing it also becomes an extremely satisfying experience. You simply have to provide it with the right container, soil, temperature, and nurture it properly in order to enjoy homegrown turmeric rhizomes in your kitchen.
