Identifying your parenting style and is it the right one?

Every parent has a style of their own in which they choose to raise their kids. But how does your parenting style matter? The answer is that how you choose to raise your kids can play a big role in how they turn out as well as the impact on their emotional and mental well-being. Parents play a big role in shaping their child's personality and therefore it is only fair enough to introspect and become aware of your personality as a parent. Here are 4 main types of parenting personalities and their key traits:

2/6

Authoritarian Parenting

This is a strict form of parenting style in which the parent establishes strict rules that the child obeys. There is little room for open communication and friendly banter between the parent and the child. Mistakes are not easily forgiven and the child is punished for the same. Parents may have a temper. While children raised with this parenting style may be the most well-behaved, it is a point to think why you would want your child to be afraid of you. Children may grow up to rebel against authority figures as they grow older.

3/6

Authoritative Parenting

This is a more balanced, healthier style of parenting in which the parent uses both love and discipline to raise their children. The focus is on raising kids who are happy, confident, responsible and well-educated or skilled. These children are usually emotionally healthy and may have healthy communication with their parents. The children grow up to be independent and accomplished adults.

4/6

Permissive Parenting

This parenting style involves being friendly with your child. Parents hardly control or monitor their child – whether it is homework completion or eating their greens. This may result in spoiled kids who may become selfish or unhealthy adults as they grow up. In this age of modern parenting, this style makes us wonder about the importance of rules and discipline in raising a child.

5/6

Uninvolved Parenting

This parenting style is not ideal as it involves limited communication and nurturing from the parent’s end. They only fulfill the child’s basic needs but may not be spending enough time with the child or showering them with unconditional love. Children raised by such parents may become mentally mature sooner than they should. They might skip on the carefree part of childhood that other kids enjoy. They may also struggle to manage their deeper emotions.

What is the best parenting style?

There is no universally "best" parenting style as effective parenting depends on both the parents as well as the child. However, a balanced and authoritative parenting style, which combines love and support with healthy boundaries and discipline, is often associated with positive child outcomes. It's important to adapt parenting strategies to the unique needs of your child and be responsive to their development. It is also important to stay flexible and evolve as your child grows.
