5 signs your teen is struggling and you haven’t noticed

Watch out for these 5 signs which indicate that your teen is secretly struggling

Parenting a teenager can feel like decoding a secret language. Between mood swings, slammed doors and long silences, it is easy to chalk everything up to “just being a teen” but sometimes, behind the eye rolls and late nights, your child could be quietly struggling.

2/8

Modern pressures

Modern pressures from academic competition and social media to post-Covid disruptions mean that teen mental health challenges are on the rise. The tricky part? The warning signs often look like normal teenage behaviour. Here are five subtle but serious signs your teen may be struggling and what you can do about it.

3/8

Sudden drop in academic performance

Every teen misses assignments now and then, but a noticeable, sustained decline in grades or a sudden disinterest in schoolwork can signal deeper issues. According to a 2021 study published in the Journal of Adolescence, academic decline was linked with underlying stress, depression or anxiety. If your teen goes from caring about classes to dismissing them entirely, it’s worth asking why.

4/8

Changes in sleep or eating patterns

Sleep is the first thing disrupted when teens are under emotional strain. A 2020 study in Sleep Medicine found that irregular sleep cycles in adolescents often correlate with heightened risk of depression. Similarly, changes in appetite like eating too little or too much can indicate emotional distress rather than simple “picky eating”.

5/8

Withdrawal from friends or activities

Teens thrive on peer connection, so withdrawing from social groups or hobbies can be a red flag. As per a 2019 research paper in Child Psychiatry & Human Development, social withdrawal is one of the earliest observable indicators of adolescent depression. If your once-chatty teen spends more time alone or quits activities they once loved, take note.

6/8

Heightened irritability and emotional outbursts

Mood swings are part of adolescence, but watch for intensity and frequency. Researchers in a 2018 study of The Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology noted that irritability is a key symptom of underlying mood disorders in teens. If anger or emotional outbursts feel disproportionate or are happening daily, it may be more than “teen attitude”.

7/8

Frequent physical complaints

Headaches, stomach aches or vague “not feeling well” episodes can sometimes mask emotional struggles. A 2017 study in the Pediatrics Journal established that adolescents often express psychological distress through somatic symptoms. If medical checks reveal no clear cause, it could point to hidden stress or anxiety.

8/8

Bottom line

The biggest misconception is that the struggling teens will always “show” their pain clearly. In reality, many mask it well until things escalate. By staying alert to subtle changes in mood, behaviour and daily habits, parents can spot trouble early and step in before small struggles grow into bigger battles. Your teen may not always say the words but with the right attention, you can hear what they are not telling you.
