5 times OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showed that fatherhood comes first

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed a son with his husband Oliver Mulherin in February this year and has been a hands-on dad. He revealed during his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the early months of parenting have been an intense learning curve.

A learning process

Altman shared a personal and relatable confession that he regularly relies on AI tool to navigate the early challenges of raising his newborn son. For the tech leader, the AI chatbot he helped create has become his indispensable companion in understanding the whirlwind that is newborn parenting.

3/6

Impact of his new role as a parent

He shared in an interview, “I don’t think I have anything non-cliché to say here, but it is the best, most amazing thing ever. And it totally rewired all of my priorities. I remember in the first hour, I felt this neurochemical change, and it happened so fast. I was like, ‘Oh, I get to, like, observe this. Like, I am being, like, neurochemically hacked, but I’m noticing it happening. I’m totally fine with it. That’s great. But everything is going to be different now.’”

4/6

On being better in his profession

He added further, “A lot of people have said, ‘I’m very happy you’re having a kid, because I think you’ll make better decisions for humanity as a whole. I really wanted to get it right before, and do the best I could. I still really want to now.”

5/6

Proud of a preemie baby

With a witty note he wrote, “Very proud of the openai team for what is perhaps the most impressive scientific/technical breakthrough of recent decades thought that was the thing i'd always be most proud of in life. Turns out i am now more proud of a preemie baby for learning how to eat on his own!”

Positivity after announcing birth of their premature baby

On February 23, Mr Altman penned an emotional note on X to announce the birth of his son. He wrote, "Welcome to the world, little guy! He came early and is going to be in the NICU for a while. He is doing well, and it's really nice to be in a little bubble taking care of him. I have never felt such love."
