7 questions to ask your child’s teacher if your child struggles with attention

A child who has difficulty paying attention when they are at school can also impact their confidence and learning at the same time when they don’t get the attention they need. Parents realise these signs when they see the child not finish homework, losing things, and getting irritated, and this is the reason why they should also learn what is going on at school, along with conversations with the teachers.

2/8

In what ways does my child have difficulties with attention at school?

The needs of attention that all children have will differ in the classroom. There are children who have problems sitting still, while some look so quiet but are obviously not concentrating. The question helps the parent realise how things are observed in class. The class teacher can give concrete examples of how the child doesn’t follow instructions, daydreams, or needs constant reminders.

3/8

Are there certain times of the day or certain subjects that my child finds more challenging?

Difficulties with attention may or may not be consistent throughout the day. The child may be able to attend or focus in the arts but find it challenging to attend to academics for a longer period of time. Identifying the areas or patterns, like tiredness from lunch or struggling with math, helps parents plan to deal with the issue in a much more appropriate manner than just putting the square peg into the square hole.

4/8

In what ways are my child’s focus strategies presently being utilized?

These are usually coping mechanisms and techniques practiced by classroom teachers to keep the children focused. This question indicates cooperation and not just concern. Parents can reinforce this too to keep the children focused. What works helps to eliminate repetition and draws attention to already effective techniques that are suitable to the learning pace of the child.

5/8

In what way does your child interact with others in class activities?

Attention problem behaviors might interfere with social interactions from time to time, interrupting speakers, failing to notice social cues, or avoiding participation in group projects. This particular question opens the way to understanding the role of attention with regard to relationships instead of merely academics. Teachers might explain the extent to which the child participates with others easily, requires some support, or becomes too overwhelmed.

6/8

Is my child meeting the expectations for learning despite his attention difficulties?

This question allows parents to distinguish between issues related to attention and intelligence. Some students have difficulty paying attention but possess academic skills. The teacher will be able to define the extent to which the educational objectives are being attained and where there may be a lag, also allowing them to determine the impact of attention difficulties on academic performance.

7/8

Is there any need to be aided or appraised at this point?

Teachers, being experienced, can point the parents in the right direction regarding whether issues are normal or should be looked at further. This is the beginning of an innocuous conversation regarding support services or counselors/specialists should the need arise. Early awareness allows for informed decision-making without alarm in order for the child to be aided at the appropriately timed moment.

8/8

In what ways can we collaborate to support my child?

The best results are achieved together. This question highlights the aspect of collaboration or partnership. Some very simple strategies, tips, or systems put forth by the teacher may help the child. If home and the school are on the same page regarding expectations for support, the child feels more protected, leading to increased concentration, confidence, and overall well-being.
