"Fail hi to hue ho...zindagi khatam nahi ho gayi": Emotional scene from "Gullak" teaches us THESE lessons

The beacon of light in the darkness of failure

A touching scene from Gullak, a web series, teaches us a few good lessons about parenting and acceptance.

In the scene, the family's elder son, probably 22/23 years old, has just failed in his first attempt of SSC or the exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, an ambitious exam for which lakhs of graduates appear every year.

Clearing a government job exam is the dream of every middle class family.

Gullak means piggy bank

A fairly new web series, Gullak, is about the Mishra family which consists of Santosh Mishra, an employee in the Electricity department, his wife Shanti Mishra, a homemaker, the elder son Anand Mishra (Annu), an engineer and SSC aspirant and Aman Mishra, who is studying in class 10.

Jameel Khan and Geetanjali Kulkarni are playing the lead roles in the series.

When siblings become your confidante

In the morning of Raksha Bandhan, when the elder Mishras are busy making arrangements for Santosh's sister to arrive, we see a tense Annu on the terrace.

Next we see Annu confiding his fear and hesitation in Aman, his younger brother who seems to be as panicked as the elder one.

The immediate parental reaction to failure

When a seemingly disturbed Annu reveals to his mother about failing the exam, Shanti who was already unwell since the morning, fainted.

For the next few minutes we see a tensed Mishra household with the mother laying on the bed, father by her side and Annu sitting outside in guilt.

The negative motivation factor

Santosh calls his son inside the room where he is sitting near his wife. What follows next ought to leave everyone in tears.

Santosh asks his son to not feel bad about his failure. To make his son feel better he gives his son examples of those who cleared the exam in 3-4 attempts.

Shanti, who is still weak, sits on the bed and asks her son to not feel bad and try next time. "Fail hi to hue ho...zindagi khatam nahi hui hai," she says gathering energy to speak these words.

When a visibly confused Annu listens to all this, he asks his dad, "aap naraaj nahi ho?

"Bilkul hain," the dad replies. "Par kya maa baap tumko kuchh bhi na bolein," he adds.

He talks about negative motivation. This is a psychological trick parents use to warn their kids, mostly about exams. For example, when moms say the play time will be cut down by one hour if the child does not score good marks in the exam it is negative motivation.

“If you don’t clear SSC…”

Santosh motivates his son by saying, “if you do not clear SSC exam, don’t worry and open a tea stall.”

“I am confident that even if it will be a simple tea stall, with your talent you will make it a landmark,” said the father. By this time the entire family had tears in their eyes.

Parental support during failure is extremely important for the child to gather the leftover courage and amplify it to give another attempt.

Gullak teaches us about family and when a family needs to stand closer to each other.
