From a bicycle shop to fame: When Jeff Bezos’ father didn’t know his son was a billionaire

Jeff Bezos is one of the richest men on the planet and much before the world knew, there was a quiet human story unfolding far from Silicon Valley. There was a time when even his biological father, Ted Jorgensen, was unaware of his son's immense success until 2012.

A childhood in absence of real father and adoption

Born in 1964, Jeff’s parents Jacklyn Gise and Ted Jorgensen where teenagers. While their marriage didn’t last long, and his father left them when he was still a toddler. His mother Jacklyn later got married to Miguel Bezos. He was a Cuban immigrant and adopted Jeff. It was Miguel, who became Jeff’s father figure. Jeff grew up crediting his values and discipline.




Jeff’s biological father, Ted Jorgensen didn’t have any idea about what his child is growing up to become for decades. He moved on in his life unaware of rapid rise of Amazon.

When the truth emerged

It was in 2012, when journalist Brad Stone tracked down Ted while researching for his book The Everything Store. Reportedly, Ted didn’t even recognise his son’s name when addressed as Jeff Bezos. Once Ted was shown the photographs, he realised it’s his son. And as soon as he realised, he was filled with regret. “I wasn’t a good father or a good husband,” he said back then, recalling how he became distant from his son.

The father who was there

One the other hand, Jeff has always maintained about who he considers as his real father. In several interviews, Jeff has always credited Miguel as his father figure. Miguel along with Jacklyn around 2,50,000 dollars in Jeff’s company back in 1995.



Sadly, Jeff’s biological father Ted passed away in 2015, just 3 years after learning about his son’s accomplishments. A family source late shared that he never approached Jeff ever after learning the truth. It was a quiet ending to one of Silicon Valley’s most emotional untold stories.
