How having a toxic parent impacts you as an adult

In a child's life, parents play an important role. As they grow up, most of what they do and how they are reflects what they observed and are taught when they're young. Young kids live their entire childhood under the guidance of their parents. While it is absolutely normal for parents to make mistakes, neglecting children's emotional needs and disregarding their plea for help can be more toxic than you think.

Parents can become toxic in many ways. Either it is evident, or it may be indirect. All in all, it leaves a lasting impact on a child's mind and their adult life. That said, here are some ways having a toxic parents may have impact your life as an adult.

2/6

You find it difficult to handle criticism and failure

Children who have extremely toxic parents often take failure and criticism very seriously. As devastated as they are about their defeat, they're as baffled about the consequences. As an adult, if you had a toxic parent, the inability to handle criticism may reflect. The associated fear of a serious outcome or punishment lingers on with your and perfection is all you can think of.

3/6

You have a hard time trusting people

Whether in terms of friends or a romantic partner, do you have difficulty trusting them? If you had parents who lied to you, made excuses for not being there, had affairs, filed a divorce, then, the possibilities of you struggling with loyalty and trust are high. This is because the closest people you knew when you were a kid built a space for you that was full of deceit and manipulation. This could often have an impact on your mind and mental health when you're an adult.

4/6

You do not invest in Self-care

Children, who have strict, toxic parents, often grow up to be ambitious. They hardly care about their emotional needs and all they ever want is to reach the height of success, making them pay no attention to their mind and body. That said, self-care is often lost in their life, making them more vulnerable and prone to stress and anxiety.

5/6

You lack confidence and are self-critical

The fact that parents push their children to achieve great things in life is only productive when they also express love and support. This is something toxic parenting lacks.

Often children with unsupportive parents grow up to become extremely harsh on themselves and do not have the confidence and self esteem to stand up for what's right. They showcase a sycophantic personality who agrees with everyone's attitude, but does not believe in one's own opinion.

6/6

You're always guilt-ridden and apologetic.

Given that people who were raised with toxic, unsympathetic parents, lack confidence in themselves, they're most often guilty for the wrong reasons. Not everything is in our control, but because you were raised in a manner where you were blamed for all the wrong things, you grow up to be guilty for everything and may find yourself apologizing for others' mistakes. You lack the power to speak up and clarify.
