The story of Veervati

Sister to seven brothers, Veervati was loved by all and was the apple of the eye. After she married she observed Karwa Chauth fast like every other married woman.

On one Karwa Chauth, her brothers could not bear seeing her fast from sunrise till late in the evening. Following the custom, they asked Veervati to break her fast telling her falsely that the moon has risen.

Believing her brothers, Veervati broke her fast and soon after this her husband died. Heartbroken Veervati begged God to give her back her husband. To this, God asked her to observe the fast with utmost sincerity and devotion the next year.

Veervati waited for an entire year to bring her husband back to life.

The story of Draupadi

This is a very interesting story about Karwa Chauth.

Once Pandava prince Arjuna went to Nilgiri mountains. For a very long time there was no words from him which made his wife Draupadi worried about him. The long absence of her husband made Draupadi anxious.

To find a solution to this, she went to her sakhaa Lord Krishna who then narrated to her the significance of Karwa Chauth.

After learning the rituals from Lord Krishna, Drauapdi observed the fast herself. Soon her problems were resolved.

The story of a woman named Karwa

It is said that once a woman named Karwa lived with her husband near a river. One day her husband was killed by a crocodile. Karwa prayed to Lord Yama, and asked him to give her back her husband's life and punish the crocodile.

To this, Lord Yama denied and said it to be the matter of life and death.

However, Karwa who was inconsolable started cursing Lord Yama. Seeing this, Yama gave her back her husband's life and sent the crocodile to hell.

In many parts of India, women pray Karwa Mata during Karwa Chauth.
