Priyanka Chopra’s relationship with her mother

Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas was born in Jamshedpur, India, to the family of Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra. The actor was very close to her father, who passed away in 2013. She also shares a close relationship with her mother. In a recent interview, the global star’s mom revealed that she too made several parenting mistakes while raising her daughter. Here is more about Priyanka’s childhood struggles.

Communicating with her daughter

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Dr. Chopra reveals the regrets she has now, looking back on her parenting skills. “Priyanka was beloved. She was the first girl in the family, and everybody loved her. I often regret the steps I took. She was four or five years old when she snapped at her father. I realized that these were the same words I’d use on her, and it made me doubt my parenting. Perhaps I wasn’t doing the right things.”

Boarding school at age 7

Dr. Chopra also talked about the tough time period when she had sent her daughter to the boarding school when she was seven years old. Dr Chopra said, “When she was seven, I put her in a boarding school without my husband’s approval, without my family’s approval. I didn’t counsel Priyanka either. Those four years were very tough… But neither of my children have accused me of abandoning them yet.”

Going to the US at age 12

Priyanka’s mother shared that her daughter had spent her teen years without her parents in the US. Dr. Madhu revealed, “We weren’t worried, because she was staying with family. But she was a teenager, and it’s important to spend time with parents at that age. It isn’t easy for relatives to understand a child of that age like her parents can. And it isn’t easy to take care of someone else’s child. Hormones are running wild at that age, you have to be really careful. She left at the age of 12, she returned when she was 15 or 16.”

5/6

Less contact during growing age

She added, “I used to miss her a lot. We didn’t have mobile phones in those days, so the only time we’d connect was when my younger sister would call. Priyanka was staying with her. We were in the Army then, and phones weren’t available easily to everybody. We’d talk maybe once a week or in 10 days. It was very tough. And before that, I’d sent her to boarding school, which was also very tough.”

Possible childhood PTSD trauma

Talking about issues with beauty and complexion when Priyanka was young, her mom added, “I think she might have had childhood PTSD trauma because when she was very young, everyone in the Chopra family was ‘gora-chitta’ (fair) except her father. And she went on her father and she was not at all that bad, she was very good looking, she had a ‘gehu’ (wheatish) complexion. But there were few people who taunted her about her complexion and maybe that remained in her head. Apart from that she was a stunner.”
