Signs your kid needs more discipline and how to start

Learn to draw a line

Nobody wants to raise spoilt children who are disrespectful, but since all parents wish to give children all that they have, it can at times lead to over indulgence or unhealthy behavioral patterns in children. Giving in to their demands, helping them too much and accepting all their behaviors can lead to children not obeying rules and being a little out of bounds. They can grow up with a lack of discipline and parents’ attempts to foster their child’s self-esteem can at times lead to children being spoilt and less disciplined. Here are seven signs that you should look out for if you feel your child needs more discipline.

2/7

Can’t hear ‘No’

If your child does not take no for an answer, you should reconsider its discipline and approach towards things. Instead of using the word outright, try and use substitutes that include phrases.

3/7

No conscience

It is extremely alarming to see your child behave without a conscience. If they do something bad and do not feel bad about it, it is a clear indication of lack of discipline. Try and talk to your child about its feelings and how others would feel with regard to their behavior, instead of talking about things that are wrong with it.

4/7

Blaming

If your child blames you or other children for their mistakes, it is an extremely telling sign about the lack of discipline of a child. If your child refuses to take responsibility for their actions, they will never take any concrete steps to rectify them. Teach them to take accountability for their actions and their choices and make responsibility tangible for them.

5/7

Too much in control

If your child is always controlling, it is important for you to take the reins in your hands. Try and give your child choices so that they know that they are not the only one who has a say in everything but at the same time, they feel in control.

6/7

They are indifferent towards you

If your child takes no note of how you feel, and keep on doing whatever they like instead of taking your feelings into consideration, it is a sign for you to pay more attention to your child. You should let them know that it is not all about them and say things that ensure that your feelings are being conveyed to your child. Try using ‘I’ phrases instead of ‘you’ phrases so that your emotions and mental state are clearly conveyed.

7/7

Lack of kindness and empathy

If you see your child take actions that lack kindness, empathy or compassion, it requires emotional discipline. Whenever you see your child take any small actions of the smallest consideration, make sure you appreciate them so that you encourage their behavior.
