Subtle ways to inculcate good manners in your child

Children are vulnerable souls who are easily influenced by their surroundings. While every parent wants their child to be the best, it shouldn't come as a surprise when you realise your child is your own reflection and behaves how you conduct yourself around them. That said, how you present yourself around your kid, the kind of environment you build for them and the relationship you have with your kid, is what determines how your child portrays himself or herself in the future.

So, if you're looking to raise a responsible and a well-mannered kid without putting in much effort, here are some subtle ways to inculcate manners in your child.

2/7

Do not wait for them to grow up

Often, parents wait for their children to grow up and reach a stage of maturity, so as to teach them what being good and kind in the society means. However, instilling such values and beliefs should start at an early stage. Children are observant and the faster you realise it, the sooner they'll learn to be at their best behaviour.

3/7

Be a good role model

As is known, children learn from their parents. Sometimes parents tend to deflect from what they teach their kids. This places the child in a conflicted state of mind. Therefore, if you want your child to be great at something, it is time to first self-reflect and work on yourself. Be the person you want your kids to become.

4/7

Set proper ground rules

Parenting involves a lot of work. Therefore, while you may not make it that obvious, you can surely set proper ground rules to make your child more accountable and punctual. For instance, allocating different hours for different activities and providing a routine plan for everything will make your kid more conscious of the idea of punctuality and will help them value time.

5/7

Build an atmosphere of kindness

Before you start educating your child about manners, understand the very crux of why it is important. Teaching your child etiquettes will only help them 'appear' well-mannered in front of people. But when you choose to teach them kindness, manners will also run in their nature. Therefore, aim to build an atmosphere of kindness and humility rather than conforming to what the society demands of you and your child.

6/7

Do not demand an apology

Children are prone to make mistakes. But instead of asking for an apology, help them learn from their mistakes and decide for themselves whether they should apologize or not. Doing so will make them naturally accountable for all the mistakes they make.

7/7

Avoid spoon-feeding them

While you may want to pamper your kid and give them the best of everything, letting your child thrive on their own will help them understand responsibility and their role in the society. If you continue to spoon-feed them, they're just going to be dependent on you and will take everything for granted.
