Timeless tips: Parenting wisdom to borrow from our grandparents

Why is it important to borrow parenting ideas from those with yesteryear experience?

Parenting has entered the path of modernity already. Parents are no longer agreeing to follow the parenting rules and regulations which usually trickle down from older generations. Modern parents want their children to have modern values. Culture and tradition have taken a backseat in modern parenting; instead, social media trends have taken the lead. While each parenting style has its own pros and cons, the ones with a stronghold over traditional values are always relevant.

Raise kids in a joint family

This will be probably the first and foremost parenting wisdom one needs to borrow from grandparents. Back in those days, our grandparents might not have imagined living in a nuclear family. Joint families are interweaved with relations and emotions. This gives the child an opportunity to know everyone better. In view of the growing number of nuclear families these days, parents should take time and visit their ancestral places.

Raise kids among lots of other kids

In joint families, kids mingle with other kids in the household. The kids grow up together with their differences and similarities. Despite the diversity, children in joint families grow up to care for, love, and nurture each other. The differences between them do not make them bitter towards each other. They learn to embrace the distinctness in each of the siblings and accept it. If you are staying away from your family in a small setup, allow your kids to have lots of friends in the neighborhood.

4/6

Raise kids in a technology-free environment

Technology is a fairly new concept. This new discovery by humankind has a big role to play in modern parenting. Every member of the family spends hours together on phones and laptops. Spending time with the family has become a luxury these days. This is one of the biggest learning one can borrow from the grandparents. Fix a no-technology time in your house, where all of you can sit together and talk.

5/6

Raise kids by keeping the communication channels open

Mannerism, gratification, and politeness are the foundation of every relationship including parenting. Always keep the communication channels open and decent. Storytelling can be an excellent way to communicate values to the kids. In a big family, kids grow up with people of different age groups which makes them aware of the different groups of people living in society. Grandparents play an important role in introducing kids to their relatives.

6/6

Raise kids in a way that everything homemade has a first preference

Grandparents always discourage us from having something from outside. Be it a street food or handicraft decor item, our grandfathers and grandmothers have a talent for making everything at home. On the contrary, home deliveries are a big part of parenting these days. On one hand, this saves time as everything is just a click away these days, it slowly kills the knowledge and talent of doing certain things.

Keep pace with modernity, but stop for a while and check if you are missing out on getting traditional values.
