The early clues that can double your happiness

Expecting twins is both exciting and overwhelming, it’s surprising how many extra things there are to think about when you’re carrying two babies. While the only definitive way to confirm a twin pregnancy is through sonogram, many women begin to notice early signs and symptoms that feel different or more intense than in previous pregnancies. These early clues often appear within days or weeks after a missed period. While none of these signs can guarantee twins, they may signal the possibility and are worth paying attention to, says Dr. Mannan Gupta, Chairman & HOD- Obstetrics & Gynaecology Elantis Healthcare New Delhi and explains about the different signals of twin pregnancy.

2/7

Stronger and earlier pregnancy symptoms

One of the earliest signs of a twin pregnancy is experiencing more intense pregnancy symptoms than usual. This usually happens because the body produces higher levels of pregnancy hormones, especially hCG, in a twin pregnancy. Many women report stronger or earlier morning sickness compared to a typical single-baby pregnancy.

3/7

Faster weight gain and a larger belly

Rapid weight gain in the first trimester or an early increase in abdominal size can also indicate twins. Some women may find their clothing feeling snug much sooner than expected. During early prenatal checkups, doctors may notice a larger-than-normal uterus size for the stage of pregnancy, prompting an early ultrasound.

4/7

Extreme fatigue and increased appetite

Women carrying twins often experience greater fatigue, especially in the early weeks. Growing and supporting two babies requires significantly more energy, which leads to deeper exhaustion. Many also notice a stronger or more frequent appetite as the body demands more energy and nutrients.

5/7

Early fetal movement

Some women pregnant with twins report feeling fetal movement earlier than expected—often described as flutters or tiny kicks. This may happen due to more than one baby moving, although not every woman experiences early movement, so this alone is not a reliable indicator.

6/7

Elevated hCG or AFP levels

Blood tests showing unusually high levels of hCG (pregnancy hormone) or AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) can also signal the possibility of twins. However, these levels can vary significantly and are not a definitive confirmation.

7/7

Ultrasound: The only reliable confirmation

While all of the above signs can raise suspicion, they can also occur in singleton pregnancies. The earliest and most accurate way to confirm a twin pregnancy is through an ultrasound. If you suspect twins based on strong symptoms or feel something unusual, contact your healthcare provider for proper evaluation and guidance.
