What parents should watch out for when it comes to their teen's relationship

When your little child grows up into a beautiful young teen, there's a whole new set of challenges waiting to torment you and you must brace up for the same. As important as it is to stay informed about your teen's life, to befriend them, it is as crucial to guide and support them through their tough times.

As they step into another phase of their lives, new and exciting emotions come alive, they start recognizing themselves for who they are and also become more aware of their romantic and sexual feelings. While it is still considered a taboo for young adults to date, it is something that is inevitable, so why focus on prohibiting it, rather than giving them the right lessons and guidance.

Many young teens, because they're still budding, do not understand the difference between a healthy and a toxic relationship. They cannot identify the thin line between love and possessiveness and over time become lost in the chaos. That said, as parents, here are some signs that your teen is in a toxic, unhealthy relationship and how you can reach out to them.

2/7

Your teen spends less time with friends and family

Although it's common and very typical for teens to distance themselves from their family, if they do it after getting into a relationship, then it could be a warning sign. This could occur when your teen's partner is extremely jealous and/or possessive. They could be very controlling of your teen, limiting them from getting not only getting closer to their friends but from you too.

3/7

You can sense a lack of self-esteem in your child

Often when teen's are in a toxic relationship, they fail to show normal self-confidence, such as making their own decisions, expressing their opinion and putting forth their ideas. This happens because your teen’s partner shows a lack of respect for your child’s goals and ambitions, which tends to affect their own self-esteem.

4/7

He/she is always apologizing

Being apologetic for a mistake is a humble trait. But if you see your teen apologizing to their partner for everything, then it could be a red flag. Saying ' sorry' over and over again can be a sign of dependency. It is because they don't want to lose their partner that they feel okay to apologize all the time, even if it is not their fault.

5/7

Mood swings have become more common than ever

It is important to note any change in your teen's mood or their personality. Being in a relationship with a toxic person alters how one behaves or feels about themselves. While they may try their best to please their partner, they may have a completely different attitude towards people who love them. Any changes in personality is a reflection of being controlled or belittled.

6/7

Unexplained bruises are a warning sign

Other than emotional impact, physical changes such as unexplained bruises can signal a toxic relationship. Physical abuse is never okay and it can start at a very young age. That said, if your teen hides their body from you or tries to conceal a part of their body, there could again be a red flag.

7/7

How to help your teen through a toxic relationship

Rather than making them feel guilty about their choices, listen to them and provide them support. Agree to what your child has to say, but also give them necessary advice. Show concern but avoid ultimatums.

Next, decide on resolving problems together. Let them know what is best for them without shutting their opinions down.

Most importantly, let your teen recognize when a relationship is unhealthy. For instance, ineffective communication is one of the many signs of toxic relationships. This includes not listening, getting defensive, expecting others to instinctively get your point and emotions and avoiding confrontations. In addition, one must not be controlling of one's actions and emotions. Jealousy and possessiveness being the most negative traits.
