Do have these 5 conversations with your would-be mother-in-law

You get a long or not, before you get ready for a wedding and take that leap, there are a few conversations you must have with your future mother-in-law. There are a few topics that ought to be discussed and leave nothing as a presumption because dynamics change, people change and we are pretty sure you know of some cases around you. So meet her on a lunch date, sit somewhere away from the crowd, order your favourite beverages and food. Address these 5 topics of conversation with your would-be mother-in-law.

2/6

Secrets

When it comes to secrets, you have to be very smart in articulating your question. Simply ask what are those two things about your spouse and home that you should be aware of. Do not alarm her, but ask her because “you don't want a rocky marriage”. Begin with funny stories then ripple down to the childhood he had and then eventually ask about that secret. However, don’t get after her life.

3/6

That evergreen food trick

Many tend to snap when we are hungry and there is this one dish or snack that cheers us up. If you know it already then it is a different deal but some have a comforting childhood memory with a certain edible that brings us out of that gloomy mood. Ask your mother-in-law about it even if you know it. She will also feel that you care about her son.

4/6

The holiday scenario

How to spend the holidays can be an issue and has been in many households so learn from that and chalk out a plan. Just like Jennifer Lopez says it to Jane Fonda at the end of the movie Monster-in-Law, tell her that the key holidays the family will be together and that you will make sure that there is ample family time every year. But do tell her there will be some holidays when you want to spend time with your husband or you as a couple want to chill out with your friends. Discuss the holidays and leave no scope for miscommunication. Also, stick to them.

5/6

The kids topic

This is a major concern for all brides. After marriage, most in-laws get after the bride’s life for a grandchild. Unless you are ready, let her know what you and your partner have discussed. Tell her that the baby talk is off the tables because you will eventually do it yourself whenever you are ready.

6/6

Make her feel secure

Every mother is possessive about her kid, no matter how expressive she is about it. Make her feel secure and say it out loud that you are not here to push her out of the family picture. Let her know that she will always have the first position because she is the mother and then you come in. This may ease her nerves a bit.
