5 stages of love

The concept of love is deep rooted in Hinduism and there are many interesting stories attached to it. Not many are aware that there are 5 stages of love if we go by the sages of ancient India. For a better understanding, scroll down.

2/6

Kama

This first stage is all about physical attraction. Kama means sensory cravings which is basically the sexual desire. Interestingly, sex is not associated with shame. It is in fact a joyous aspect and hence features in Kamasutra which is not just about positions, it involves love and philosophy.

3/6

Shringar

This stage can be translated into romance. It is the erotic attraction that we feel from kama. This is when we share secrets, call each other with loving names, exchange thoughtful gifts.

4/6

Maitri

This is the motherly love stage, the compassion in us which is applicable on all beings. It is the act of kindness and care that we develop for the other. When you are compassionate with others, you become the same for your partner.

5/6

Bhakti

As per the sages, this is Bhakti yoga where you cultivate love not just for your partner but also for God. Here God is not just a deity but it is the highest form of truth and kindness.

6/6

Atma Prema

This stage is the ultimate. It is all about self love. If you do not love yourself, you cannot love anyone else with your whole heart. What you see in the other person is nothing but a reflection of your own personality, your own thoughts.
