Are you a people pleaser? Here are some NEGATIVE consequences you didn’t realise

Here is why you should not be one

There are so many people around us or we are who are people pleasers. Many do not even realise they have this tendency until told. People pleasers are those who have the tendency to prioritize others' needs and desires at the expense of one's own. They feel it is a virtue, but it often has several negative consequences that can impact various aspects of a person's life.

2/6

Strained relationships

Yes, the intention behind people-pleasing is to foster positive relationships, but the constant need to accommodate others can lead to strained connections. Over time, the lack of authenticity and genuine expression strains the trust in relationships. People-pleasers may find themselves in a cycle of saying yes to avoid conflict, only to harbor resentment later.

3/6

Diminished self-esteem

The perpetual need to seek approval and validation from others can take a toll on self-esteem. People-pleasers derive their sense of worth from external sources, and this leads to fragile self-image. Continuous efforts to meet others' expectations leaves people feeling unfulfilled and undervalued, and this directly has a truly negative impact on their overall self-worth.

4/6

Burnout and exhaustion

The relentless pursuit of meeting others' needs can result in burnout and exhaustion. People-pleasers stretch themselves, juggle numerous commitments without thinking of their own well-being. The constant fear of disappointing others can lead to chronic stress, fatigue, and an overall decline in mental and physical health.

5/6

Inability to set boundaries

People-pleasers struggle to set boundaries, because the fear of disappointing others outweighs their own needs. This lack of boundary-setting can lead to exploitation, with others taking advantage of the people-pleaser's willingness to accommodate, leaving them feeling overwhelmed and overburdened.

6/6

Career implications

In the workplace, when you are a chronic people-pleaser, the inability to assert oneself, express opinions, and negotiate for personal needs may hinder professional growth. Colleagues and superiors may perceive the people-pleaser as indecisive or lacking leadership qualities, potentially impacting career advancement.
