Here are some honest confessions

Having an alcoholic husband or wife is problematic for all. Their other half suffers a lot. It can take an emotional and psychological toll. We spoke to some married men and women who have had alcoholic partners and here are their experiences that you may be able to relate to.

My life was a living hell

My husband’s drinking escalated from social drinking to an addiction. I initially thought I could change him, but soon came to terms with my inability to control his actions. I felt helpless and frustrated because he started spending our future savings, lost his job and there came a time when he was in and out of hospitals every other week, draining all the money that we had. I started working again to have food in the house. With 2 growing kids, my life was a living hell until he passed away at just 40. I am still coming to terms with it but I think I lost my husband when he was just 34.

My kids were badly affected

My wife’s drinking had put a strain on our relationship and it hurt our children. My wife would drink all day, she started stealing from my wallet and sold her gold. I tried to take her to a counsellor but this did not go down well with her. She thought I was trying to get rid of her. It was a very bad phase of all our lives. But one day when my son sat in front of her with a bottle, the shock changed her. It was shocking for me too, because my son was a nice kid, but to teach a lesson to his mother the poor kid had to go to that level. She went to rehab and came out clean and it has been 5 years of being clean for her now.

He had some devastating relapses

There have been so many ups and downs in our relationship, from moments of sobriety and hope to the devastating relapses. My husband was a different person after drinking. He even got violent. The abuse is unforgivable. Our marriage had gone for a toss. It took a painful divorce for him to understand what he had done. He is a clean man now but I have moved on.

6/6

My wife worked hard to come out of it

My wife and I sought help through therapy and support groups, ultimately leading to her recovery. There is a possibility of healing and rebuilding a relationship after the devastation of alcohol addiction in most cases but it is all about how much your spouse is willing to work on it. I am glad my wife was willing to work on it and she made sure she did. It was an ugly phase of 3 long years but now we are a happy family.
