How to cope with a bipolar spouse

If you are with a spouse who is bipolar, life is definitely not easy for you. The mood swings can be overwhelming no matter how nice a person you are. If you are facing such a scenario then here are some ways that could help you in coping with a bipolar spouse.

2/6

Calm down

Take a deep breath and take a minute. His or her bipolar disease is not in his or her control so you are dealing with a different person. Don’t hate him or her, just think rationally.

3/6

Get away

Sometimes it is good to get away from someone or a situation when it gets too much to handle for your own sanity. Just let the person be and either go for a walk or stress-busting activity, just step back.

4/6

Support groups

In India, it is rare but there are some support groups that help recoup family members who deal with bipolar patients. If there is none around you, speak to a therapist. That is one of the best ways to deal with any situation when you see no other way out.

5/6

Remember the love

Any individual has a good side to him or her even if they are bipolar. So remember the good side, the love for him or her and don’t let go. His or her moods are unpredictable , true, but then they do come back to their original self later.

6/6

Medications

Keep a check whether your spouse is taking his or her meds or not. Make this non-negotiable because when they skip on their meds, the mood swing always comes back.
